Da circa 20 anni, il Caprices dà il via alla festival season europea di musica elettronica europea: il rendez-vous a base di house e techno di Crans Montana è infatti tappa d'obbligo per tutti gli appassionati del genere più impazienti, che non possono aspettare la stagione estiva per fare indigestione di live e dj-set lontani dalle mura dei club. Come la Friedensglocke des Alpenraumes - l'enorme "Campana della Pace delle Alpi" in Tirolo - il Caprices risuona i suoi rintocchi e avvisa che sì, è tornato quel periodo dell'anno in cui si va in pellegrinaggio nei luoghi sacri della techno.
Con una formula che sembra sempre la stessa, ma che è impercettibilmente cambiata nel corso degli anni: basti pensare che gli headliner della seconda edizione di Caprices - Anno Domini 2005 - erano gli Asian Dub Foundation, e l'anno successivo Lou Reed. Oggi i nomi scritti in grande sono - tra gli altri - quelli di Jamie XX, Jeff Mills e Richie Hawtin. Come diceva Philip Kotler, padre del marketing sociale come scienza, "esistono due tipi di aziende: quelle che cambiano, e quelle che chiudono". Caprices Festival, che speriamo non chiuda mai, ha saputo intercettare il trend ascendente dei festival elettronici, ridimensionando la dimensione live che ne aveva caratterizzato le prime edizioni.
Dimensione live che pur continua a essere un ingrediente di Caprices: oltre all'hybrid set dei WhoMadeWho e le performance di Satori e Monolink, particolarmente godibile lo slot pomeridiano dei Cobblestone Jazz. Il piatto forte del Caprices attuale - insieme alle immancabili fondute del Canton Vallese - è però il dj-set, in tutte le variazioni di colore e durezza: da quello morbidissimo di Themba, al consueto esercizio stilistico, monolitico e Roland-munito, di Jeff Mills.
Menzione a parte per il B2B tra Luciano e Ricardo Villalobos, una delle specialità della casa di Caprices: il rito del joint set tra Ricardo e Luciano si ripete tutte le edizioni nell'iconico Modernity Stage ad alta quota, come la liquefazione del sangue di San Gennaro. E anche se si sa che il miracolo si ripropone puntualmente ogni anno, la venerazione dei fedeli - ovvero noi - rimane immutata.
Insomma, un altro Caprices è passato, e non vediamo l'ora che ritorni, sempre uguale e sempre diverso, come da tradizione. Questa volta però, non occorre attendere la prossima primavera: il festival elvetico dal 12 al 14 Maggio farà tappa a Terra Janna, un pazzesco ecolodge alle porte di Marrakech, per la prima edizione di Caprices in Marocco. Gli artisti da non perdere? Âme, il live di Mathew Jonson, Konstantin Sibold, Patrice Bäumel e la nutrita compagine di minimal rumena - Rhadoo, Raresh e Petre Inspirescu - che al Caprices è di casa come il Petite Arvine, il grande vino bianco vallesano per antonomasia, e i modelli più appariscenti delle sneakers designer.

For the past 20 years or so, Caprices has been kicking off the European electronic music festival season: the House & Techno-based rendezvous in Crans Montana is indeed a must-see for all eager fans of the genre, who cannot wait for the summer season to get their fill of live and DJ sets away from club walls. Like the Friedensglocke des Alpenraumes - the huge "Peace Bell of the Alps" in Tyrol - Caprices resounds its chimes and warns that yes, that time of year when people go on pilgrimage to the holy places of techno is back.
With a formula that always seems the same, but has imperceptibly changed over the years: suffice it to say that the headliners of the second edition of Caprices - A.D. 2005 - were Asian Dub Foundation, and the following year Lou Reed. Nowadays headliners are - among others - Jamie XX, Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin. As Philip Kotler, father of social marketing as a science, said, "There are two kinds of companies: those that change, and those that close." Caprices Festival, which we hope will never close, has been able to intercept the rising trend of electronic festivals, scaling back the live dimension that had characterized its first editions.
A live dimension that nevertheless continues to be an ingredient of Caprices: in addition to Whomadewho's hybrid set and performances by Satori and Monolink, the afternoon slot by Cobblestone Jazz was particularly enjoyable. The highlight of the current Caprices - along with the ever-present fondues from Canton Valais - is, however, the DJ set, in all variations of color and hardness: from the very soft one by Themba, to the usual monolithic and Roland-united stylistic exercise by Jeff Mills.
Separate mention for the B2B between Luciano and Ricardo Villalobos, one of the specialties of the house of Caprices: the ritual of the joint set between Ricardo and Luciano is repeated every edition in the iconic Modernity Stage at high altitude, like the liquefaction of San Gennaro's blood. And although the miracle is known to be repeated punctually every year, the veneration of the faithful - that is, us - remains unchanged.
In short, another Caprices has passed, and we look forward to its return, always the same and always different, as per tradition. This time, however, there is no need to wait until next spring: the Swiss festival from May 12 to 14 will stop at Terra Janna, a crazy ecolodge just outside Marrakech, for the first edition of Caprices in Morocco. The artists not to be missed? Âme, the live performance of Mathew Jonson, Konstantin Sibold, Patrice Bäumel and the large crew of Romanian minimalists - Rhadoo , Raresh and Petre Inspirescu - who are habitué at Caprices as Petite Arvine, the quintessential great white wine from Valais, and the flashiest models of designer sneakers.
