Il palcoscenico naturale tra paesaggi incantati e borghi medievali.
Il Viva! Festival è tornato. Dal 4 al 7 agosto 2022, tra masserie, trulli e antichi borghi medievali, si esibiranno artisti provenienti da tutto il mondo. La sesta edizione prenderà forma nella settecentesca e incantevole corte della Masseria Grofoleo, nel cuore della Valle d’Itria, in Puglia, a pochi passi da uno dei borghi più suggestivi d'Italia: Locorotondo.
Il tutto si trasformerà così in un "unico e immenso palcoscenico naturale" in cui musica dal vivo e show esclusivi daranno vita ad un’esperienza imperdibile, a tratti surreale.
Sul palco del Viva! Festival si esibiranno incredibili musicisti internazionali e nazionali, tra cui Moderat, Floating Points, Gilles Peterson, Kokoroko, Jon Hopkins, Nicola Conte e molti altri.

Per l'occasione abbiamo intervistato Ninni Laterza, ideatore e cofondatore del festival, e Andrea Angelini, direttore artistico.

Il Viva! Festival è una realtà sempre più consolidata: partiamo dunque dall’origine, quando e come nasce l’idea di voler dar vita ad un evento artistico e culturale del genere?
Ninni Laterza: VIVA! nasce nel 2017, da una mia idea e proposta che feci a Sergio Ricciardone di CLUB TO CLUB, durante un incontro avvenuto a Borgo Egnazia - in Puglia. In quell'occasione ponemmo le basi per far nascere in Valle d’Itria qualcosa di importante, un festival internazionale come prima non ce n’erano. Da quella prima edizione, fino alla scorsa del 2021, il festival lo abbiamo realizzato in collaborazione tra la mia società TURNE ed EXPLOSIVA di Torino. L’esperienza e professionalità di C2C sono stati per il nostro team frutto di insegnamento fondamentale per il raggiungimento dei traguardi e del livello attuale di VIVA! Festival.
Valle d’Itria, una valle costellata di affascinanti borghi in calce bianca. Cosa significa potersi esprimere anche attraverso un paesaggio del genere, circondato da un’atmosfera quasi fiabesca?
Andrea Angelini: Anche qui lascio la parola a Ninni che è nato e cresciuto nel territorio, posso solo aggiungere che quando sono venuto qui per la prima volta, nel 2019, accompagnando Apparat, sono rimasto sorpreso dalla bellezza di Locorotondo e dei borghi limitrofi.
Ninni Laterza: Per noi che siam nati e cresciuti qui, aver dato un contributo importante alla crescita e allo sviluppo del nostro territorio, specialmente della Valle d’Itria, è una grandissima ragione d’orgoglio. Il VIVA! oggi è uno dei più importanti festival italiani, conta e ha contato molto aver portato qui la la grande musica internazionale, ma avere a disposizione un palcoscenico naturale fatto di masserie, meravigliosi borghi, paesaggi, colori ed uno splendido mare, ci ha agevolato notevolmente il compito.
Come è cambiato nel tempo Il Viva! Festival?
Ninni Laterza: La musica elettronica ha caratterizzato molto l’identità di VIVA! sin dalla prima edizione. Da quest’anno però, con Andrea subentrato con me alla direzione artistica, stiamo lavorando ad una nuova strategia futura, ma senza rinnegare assolutamente nulla di ciò che ha reso importante il "VIVA!". Vorremmo dare al festival una forma artistica più trasversale, meno connotata, improntata su più generi e su un'offerta musicale più ampia. Già da questa edizione, per esempio, abbiamo puntato molto sui live, suoneranno diverse band e potrete ascoltare vari generi. L'obiettivo per le prossime edizioni è avere a disposizione un'area molto vasta, con numerosi stage e una durata ancora maggiore.
Se vi chiedessi di raccontarmi le differenze rilevanti percepite tra le prime e questa sesta edizione, cosa mi direste?
Ninni Laterza: Sarà per i due anni di restrizioni appena trascorsi, sarà per la line up, o chissà per quale altro meccanismo misterioso, certo è che quest’anno si respira una bell’aria, di grande entusiasmo e interesse intorno al VIVA! Festival.
Quest’anno appaiono in line up nomi come Jon Hopkins, Moderat e Kokoroko, band inglese guidata da Sheila Maurice-Greycome. Quanto è importante per voi proporre un sound non monotono ma dalle differenti sfumature, affinché elettronica, jazz e afrobeat possano confluire semplicemente verso un’unica direzione: quella della musica?
Andrea Angelini: Ne parlavamo l’altro giorno con i ragazzi di Parkett Channel: l’idea di fondo di quest’anno è stata quella di aprire a più generi, spaziando tra elettronica, jazz, afrobeat, hip-hop, house e disco. Nonostante la presenza di artisti apparentemente così diversi tra loro, pensiamo di aver messo su un programma coerente dove la qualità rappresenta il trait d’union.
Mi viene da chiedervi, dato questo flusso sonoro difforme e mai banale, che si diffonde tra antiche chiese, palazzi barocchi e botteghe artigiane, chi è il frequentatore abituale del Viva?
Andrea Angelini: Anche qui Ninni può fornire sicuramente una risposta più esauriente e precisa, posso dire che sicuramente avremo un pubblico giovane ma non giovanissimo, interessato ad ascoltare musica di qualità a prescindere dal genere. Ci saranno anche molti stranieri, circa il 20% del pubblico totale.
Ninni Laterza: Uno dei nostri obbiettivi di quest’anno, su cui ci siamo concentrati molto mentre lavoravamo alla costruzione della Line Up, è quello di portare al VIVA! un pubblico appartenente a fasce d’età diverse. Puntiamo come sempre, quanto più possibile, ad un pubblico internazionale e siamo convinti che quest’anno avremo un importante incremento in questo senso, stando all’andamento delle prevendite.
Come ha risposto la Puglia ad un festival di musica elettronica del genere? Pensate che l’Italia, politicamente parlando, abbia ancora tanto da imparare dalle altre nazioni europee?
Andrea Angelini: Dando un’occhiata ai dati delle scorse edizioni direi molto bene, quelli attuali dicono che quest’anno ci sarà una crescita del numero dei partecipanti quindi direi che siamo sulla strada giusta. Per quanto riguarda la seconda parte della tua domanda, penso che in Italia ci sia tanto da imparare da tanti punti di vista.
Come immaginate il futuro del Viva! Festival?
Andrea Angelini: Vorremmo crescere sotto vari aspetti; aggiungere palchi che possano rappresentare altri generi musicali più di nicchia, incrementare la presenza del pubblico straniero, dare la possibilità di campeggiare all’interno del festival…ci sono tante idee, vedremo quello che sarà possibile realizzare già dalla prossima edizione.

The natural stage between enchanted landscapes and medieval villages.
The Viva! Festival is back. From August 4 to 7, 2022, artists from all over the world will perform among masserias, trulli and ancient medieval villages. The sixth edition will take shape in the eighteenth-century and enchanting courtyard of the Masseria Grofoleo, in the heart of the Itria Valley in Puglia, just a stone's throw from one of Italy's most picturesque villages: Locorotondo.
Everything will thus be transformed into a "unique and immense natural stage" where live music and exclusive shows will create an unmissable, at times surreal experience.
On the stage of the Viva! Festival 2022 will feature incredible international and domestic musicians, including Moderat, Floating Points, Gilles Peterson, Kokoroko, Jon Hopkins, Nicola Conte and many others.

For the occasion, we interviewed Ninni Laterza, creator and co-founder of the festival, and Andrea Angelini, artistic director.

The Viva! Festival is an increasingly established reality: so let's start from the origin, when and how did the idea of wanting to give life to such an artistic and cultural event come about?
Ninni Laterza: VIVA! was born in 2017, from an idea and proposal I made to Sergio Ricciardone of CLUB TO CLUB, during a meeting that took place in Borgo Egnazia - in Puglia. On that occasion we laid the foundations for something important to be born in Valle d'Itria, an international festival as there were none before. From that first edition, until the last one in 2021, we have realized the festival in collaboration between my company TURNE and EXPLOSIVA of Turin. C2C's experience and professionalism have been fundamental teaching fruits for our team in achieving the current goals and level of VIVA! Festival.
Itria Valley, a valley dotted with charming white lime villages. What does it mean to also be able to express yourself through such a landscape, surrounded by an almost fairy-tale atmosphere?
Andrea Angelini: Here again I leave the word to Ninni who was born and raised in the area, I can only add that when I came here for the first time, in 2019, accompanying Apparat, I was surprised by the beauty of Locorotondo and the surrounding villages.
Ninni Laterza: For those of us who were born and raised here, to have made an important contribution to the growth and development of our territory, especially the Itria Valley, is a great reason for pride. The VIVA! today is one of the most important Italian festivals, it counts and has counted a lot to have brought here the great international music, but having a natural stage made of farms, wonderful villages, landscapes, colors and a beautiful sea, has greatly facilitated our task.
How has The Viva! Festival changed over time?
Ninni Laterza: Electronic music has very much characterized the identity of VIVA! since the first edition. Since this year, however, with Andrea taking over with me as artistic director, we are working on a new future strategy, but without denying absolutely nothing of what has made "VIVA!" important. We would like to give the festival a more transversal, less connoted artistic form, marked by more genres and a wider musical offer. Already from this edition, for example, we have focused a lot on live performances, different bands will play and you can listen to various genres. The goal for the next editions is to have a very large area available, with many stages and an even longer duration.
If I asked you to tell me about the perceived relevant differences between the first and this sixth edition, what would you tell me?
Ninni Laterza: It may be because of the two years of restrictions that have just passed, it may be because of the line up, or who knows what other mysterious mechanism, what is certain is that this year there is a good air, of great enthusiasm and interest around the VIVA! Festival.
This year names such as Jon Hopkins, Moderat and Kokoroko, an English band led by Sheila Maurice-Greycome, appear in the line up. How important is it for you to propose a sound that is not monotonous but made by different nuances, so that electronic, jazz and afrobeat can simply converge towards one direction: that of music?
Andrea Angelini: We were talking about this the other day with the guys from Parkett Channel: the basic idea this year was to open up to more genres, ranging between electronic, jazz, afrobeat, hip-hop, house and disco. Despite the presence of seemingly so many different artists, we think we have put together a coherent program where quality is the trait d'union.
It makes me wonder, given this dissimilar and never mundane flow of sound, which spreads between ancient churches, baroque palaces and artisan workshops, who is the regular visitor to Viva?
Andrea Angelini: Here again Ninni can surely provide a more comprehensive and precise answer, I can say that we will definitely have a young but not very young audience, interested in listening to quality music regardless of genre. There will also be many foreigners, about 20 percent of the total audience.
Ninni Laterza: One of our goals this year, which we focused on a lot while working on the construction of the Line Up, is to bring to VIVA! an audience belonging to different age groups. We aim as always, as much as possible, at an international audience and we are convinced that this year we will have an important increase in this sense, according to the trend of pre-sales.
How has Puglia responded to such an electronic music festival? Do you think Italy, politically speaking, still has a lot to learn from other European nations?
Andrea Angelini: Taking a look at the data of the past editions I would say very well, the current ones say that this year there will be a growth in the number of participants so I would say we are on the right track. Regarding the second part of your question, I think there is a lot to learn in Italy from many points of view.
How do you envision the future of the Viva! Festival?
Andrea Angelini: We would like to grow in various aspects; add stages that can represent other more niche music genres, increase the presence of foreign audiences, give the possibility to camp inside the festival...there are so many ideas, we will see what will be possible to achieve already from the next edition.
