Dopo due anni di restrizioni, che hanno costretto il festival a uno stop forzato, torna NEOPOP, il festival di musica elettronica più emblematico del Portogallo, con una edizione che si preannuncia incredibile.
Tra il 10 e il 13 agosto, NEOPOP celebrerà il suo 15° anniversario nella sua città natale di Viana do Castelo - che per questo weekend è "The Capital of Techno" - ballando con la musica di Peggy Gou, Richie Hawtin, Honey Dijon, Jeff Mills, The Blessed Madonna, Solomun, Cobblestone Jazz (live), Amelie Lens, Loco Dice, Dax J, solo per citare alcuni nomi della ricchissima lineup.
Non solo grandi artisti stranieri: tratto distintivo di NEOPOP è puntare su una nutrita compagine di dj lusitani, che arricchiscono la lineup sin dalla prima edizione del festival, quando ancora si chiamava ANTIPOP.
Tra questi, Gu-stavo, che oltre ad essere grande DJ, è uno degli organizzatori del festival, che abbiamo intervistato e a cui abbiamo chiesto di realizzare per t-mag una playlist di artisti portoghesi habituée di NEOPOP. Ci vediamo nella "Capital of Techno"!
Benvenuto su t-mag
Partiamo dall'inizio, quando e come è nata l'idea di creare NEOPOP ?
Gu-stavo: Sono cresciuto e sono stato molto ispirato dal movimento rave in tutta Europa, specialmente nel Regno Unito. La scena originaria del clubbing in Portogallo e tutti i suoi promoter e artisti, hanno contribuito alla mia esperienza, che principalmente deriva dal lavoro a Maré Alta, un iconico after club che ospitava il meglio della scena elettronica dei DJ portoghesi. Così come dal mio lavoro come programmer ai club Gare e Industria a Porto, oltre che in molti Festival sparsi in tutto il paese. Quindi sono sempre stato all'interno di questo movimento, portando avanti la scena della musica elettronica nelle sue numerose manifestazioni nel paese. L'idea originaria di NEOPOP e di essere celebrato a Viana do Castelo, è partita da uno dei suoi partner principali: volevamo "decentralizzare" i club di elettronica dalle città più grandi e portarli in una regione che, sebbene veda la presenza di brand storici come Pacha, non vantava una programmazione più alternativa e all'avanguardia di musica elettronica. E che al contempo offrisse il fascino e le bellezze che troviamo in Viana.
Voi ragazzi siete di Porto. Come è stata scelta proprio Viana do Castelo come sede del festival?
Gu-stavo: Dopo aver fatto molte valutazioni su varie località, uno dei partner si è avvicinato al municipio di Viana do Castelo, che ha creduto nel futuro di questo progetto. La prima edizione di NEOPOP è avvenuta proprio grazie a questa loro volontà, e perché noi personalmente crediamo che la cittadina sia una gemma nascosta del nord del Portogallo con al suo interno tante sfaccettature: è una città portuale che ha anche la spiaggia, il fiume e tanti riferimenti rilevanti della cultura portoghese.
Per essere un festival techno-only", la lineup è in realtà piuttosto varia, toccando tutti i sottogeneri del genere. Gu-stavo: A dir la verità, non ci consideriamo un festival prettamente "solo techno", anche se crediamo di configurare l'ambiente perfetto per affrontare la techno come movimento globale, e al contempo servire la sua comunità e cultura. Le nostre lineup, come hai detto, sono abbastanza variegate, e rivolgono il loro focus principalmente alla cultura house e techno, ma non siamo indifferenti ad altri approcci sonori nello spettro della musica elettronica.
Una cosa che amo di NEOPOP, è l'orario "dinamico": non si sa mai quando un DJ finirà di suonare. Come è nata questa politica e qual è il feedback degli artisti a riguardo?
Ah ah ah! L'orario non è così dinamico, anche se la timetable, a causa della mole di artisti, potrebbe subire variazioni. Solitamente si hanno tutti gli orari comunicati in anticipo prima dell'inizio del festival.
Nel 2022 NEOPOP compie 15 anni. Come immagini i prossimi 15 anni di questo progetto? Questa è una domanda davvero difficile. Credo che abbiamo avviato un progetto che è costruito insieme alla comunità che lo supporta. Vorremmo che le giovani generazioni prendessero il testimone della capitale della cultura techno a Viana do Castelo, questo è certo! Amiamo ciò che facciamo, così come è molto l'entusiasmo e la soddisfazione che raccogliamo dai feedback di chi viene a NEOPOP. Finché questo spirito rimane intatto, continueremo a farlo! The Sound Of Neopop Festival English Edition After two years of pandemic restrictions that forced the festival to keep their legs and bodies still, NEOPOP, the most emblematic electronic music festival in Portugal is back, and with a great party in sight. Between the 10th and the 13th of August, NEOPOP will celebrate its 15th anniversary in its birth city of Viana do Castelo - that is becoming "the Capital of Techno" - dancing the sound of Peggy Gou, Richie Hawtin, Honey Dijon, Jeff Mills, The Blessed Madonna, Solomun, Cobblestone Jazz live, Amelie Lens, Loco Dice, Dax J, among many other amazing artists. Not only great foreign artists: NEOPOP's distinctive trait is focusing on a large team of Lusitanian DJs, who have enriched the lineup since the first edition of the festival, when it was still called ANTIPOP. Among these, Gu-stavo, who in addition to being a great DJ, is one of the organizers of the festival: we interviewed him and asked to create a playlist of NEOPOP habituée Portuguese artists for T-Mag. See you in the "Capital of Techno"! Welcome to T-Mag! Let's start from the beginning, when and how did the idea of creating NEOPOP come about? Gu-stavo: I grew up and was hugely inspired by the rave movement across europe specially UK. The initial clubbing scene in Portugal and all its agents and artist also helped on my experience that comes from working in Maré Alta, an iconic after hours venue that used to host the best of the electronic scene of portuguese DJ's to working as a programmer in Industria and Gare clubs in Porto as well as many Festivals spread around the country. So i was always within this movement pushing forward the electronic music scene in its many manifestations. The original idea for NEOPOP to be hosted in Viana do Castelo comes from one of its core partners. We wanted to decentralize the electronic venues form the bigger cities into a region that although is marked with landmark brands like Pacha didn't embraced a more alternative and cutting edge programming of electronic music and didn't offer the appeal and beautiful sights we find in Viana. You guys are from Porto. How did you choose Viana do Castelo as the location of the festival? Gu-stavo:After the prospection of many site locations, one of the partners approached Viana do Castelo, city hall, and they believed in the future of this project. The first edition of NEOPOP happened due to this will and because we believe Viana is an hidden gem of the north of Portugal with an unique contrast within a location that showcases an horizon with a harbor, beach, river and a lot of infused portuguese strains of culture. Being a "techno-only" festival, the lineup is actually pretty varied, touching all sub-genres of techno. Gu-stavo: We don't consider ourselves a "Techno-only" festival although we believe we configure the perfect setting to address techno as a global movement and serve a purpose to host its community and culture. Our lineups are as you said quite dinamic and address in majority the house and techno culture but not being indifferent to other sonic approaches of the electronic music spectrum. Something that I love about NEOPOP, it's the "dynamic" timetable: you never know when a DJ will finish the act. How did this policy come out, and what's artists feedback about that? Ahahah. The timetable is not dynamic although the lineups due to its length might suffer changes. Usually you have all the timetables communicated in advance before the festival starts. In 2022, it's 15 years of NEOPOP. How would you imagine the next 15 years of your project? That's a really hard question. I believe we started a project that is builded with the community supporting it. We would like to have the younger generations carrying the capital of techno culture legacy in Viana do Castelo, that's for sure! We love what we do and definitely the entusiasm and satisfaction we collect from the responses of who comes. So I will keep on doing it, as long as this maintains. Thank you for being with us.
