Dal 7 al 9 luglio, nel Borgo della Mistica, arriva a Roma la I edizione di Mistica Sounds Festival. Un progetto ambizioso, in uno scenario bucolico e con la possibilità di soggiornare all’interno della struttura – un unicum assoluto per Roma. Tre giornate da vivere no-stop, in linea con i festival immersivi internazionale: come di livello internazionale è la programmazione di Mistica Sounds. Dal live infuocato di MC Yallah & Debmaster al nuovo progetto di Lamusa II and Assembly Group, passando per le nuove forme di world music inseguite da Bluemarina, l’avant-industrial-hiphop di Sara Persico e Owais.
Organizzatore e demiurgo di Mistica Sounds è Toni Cutrone - agli appassionati di musica più noto sicuramente come Mai Mai Mai - con cui abbiamo scambiato due parole alla vigilia del festival, per svelarci di più su questo nuovo progetto della capitale.

- Come è nata l'idea di creare il Mistica Sounds Festival nelle campagne di Roma, nel suggestivo Borgo della Mistica?
Roma è famosa per avere tantissime location mozzafiato ed è sempre piacevole ed emozionante andare alla ricerca di nuovi posti dove organizzare eventi. La collaborazione con Borgo Della Mistica è nata un anno fa e fin dalla prima festa abbiamo capito che era il luogo giusto dove organizzare qualcosa di unico per Roma. Immerso nella natura, paesaggio agro pontino, acquedotto alessandrino, uliveto, vecchi casali. Sembra qualcosa di impossibile avere una situazione del genere ma all'interno della città... e invece eccoci qui!
- Qual è il concetto principale che volete esprimere attraverso questo festival? Cosa rende unico il Mistica Sounds rispetto ad altri eventi musicali?
L'idea base è quella di organizzare un festival immersivo, nella natura ma che sia allo stesso tempo dentro Roma. Un festival che si possa vivere per tre giorni consecutivi dalla mattina a notte, con l'opportunità di dormire all'interno della manifestazione (quest'anno all'interno dell'Hotel parte del Borgo della Mistica e con il quale abbiamo strutturato delle offerte speciali, prezzi ridotti e il deal "a room for a ticket", per il quale chi prenota la stanza ha il pass giornaliero del festival gratuito). Questa opzione per un festival a Roma è sicuramente unica e il piano per le prossime edizioni è quello di svilupparla creando anche un'area campeggio attrezzata. I contenuti musicali ed extramusicali poi fanno il resto!
- Parliamo della lineup. Come avete selezionato gli artisti che parteciperanno alla prima edizione del festival? Quali criteri avete adottato nella scelta?
Cerchiamo di portare in città musiciste e musicisti che difficilmente (o mai) capitano da queste parti per offrire qualcosa di particolare e diverso dai soliti eventi. Siamo andati a pescare nel giro mediterraneo, medio oriente, nord Africa che al momento reputiamo tra i più stimolanti ed elettrizzanti. Abbiamo scelto nel panorama italiano quello che reputiamo più fresco. E abbiamo unito a questa line up quello che di Roma rappresenta di più il nostro mood e la nostra attitudine. Ovviamente per fare qualcosa di esaustivo sarebbe servito un festival lungo tutta l'estate. Questo è solo un assaggio di tre giorni, che poi proseguiamo durante l'anno con il nostro lavoro in giro per la città, e che proseguiremo nel 2024 con la seconda edizione di Mistica Sounds.
- C'è un nome della lineup di cui siete particolarmente orgogliosi? E perché?
Sono tanti, o potrei dire tutti, i nomi di cui siamo felici e orgogliosi. Scegliendone uno, sicuramente siamo felicissimi di avere Voices from The Lake: Donato Dozzy e Neel sono due grandi musicisti e icone della scena romana e internazionale, ma difficilmente si vedono suonare insieme live in città. Quando mi hanno dato l'OK per fare il live al festival, è stato un momento misto di euforia e entusiasmo! E lo sarà ancora di più durante il loro set .
- Il sabato vedrà la co-curatela di Ortigia Sound System e Radio Alhara, con un focus sulle nuove rotte sonore dell'area mediterranea/mediorientale. Qual è l'obiettivo di questa giornata speciale?
Questa collaborazione va a concretizzare un network già esistente da tempo: fatto di persone che lavorano nel mondo musica / arte con un simile sguardo sul presente e sul futuro. Da tempo ci appassionano le produzioni che affondano le radici nelle proprie tradizioni e culture, rielaborandole in chiave contemporanea, con un approccio di ricerca. Il Mediterraneo rappresenta un bacino culturale in grande fermento, soprattutto nell'underground attraversato da nuove correnti che partono dal basso, ma che spesso arrivano in Europa con difficoltà, tagliate fuori da dinamiche propriamente occidentali. L'idea di curare una delle giornate di Mistica Sounds insieme parte proprio da questo sguardo e interesse comune: Radio Alhara, di base in Palestina, rappresenta un network fresco, stimolante e in continua evoluzione. Ortigia Sound System è una realtà tra le più forti e interessanti in Italia, fortemente localizzata nella loro terra, la Sicilia, ma con una portata internazionale e un gusto nel selezionare davvero sopraffino. Da tempo siamo in contatto e collaboriamo su diverse cose: co-curare la lineup del sabato 8 Luglio insieme è stato un modo per concretizzare questa collaborazione già in atto.
- Soprattutto negli ultimi anni, la scena romana è avara di festival. Come immaginate che il Mistica Sounds possa influenzare la realtà musicale della città?
Non abbiamo la presunzione di pensare di influenzare la scena musicale romana. Ma da anni portiamo avanti un lavoro che sicuramente la stimola e la nutre: portando in città quello che pensiamo sia più fresco ed elettrizzante, o grandi nomi del passato che rappresentano influenze seminali. E miscelare queste proposte con ciò che pensiamo di Roma sia più rappresentativo ed interessante. Da questa unione speriamo nasca una spinta a crescere e a migliorare, una spinta a creare network o anche "semplicemente" a far divertire il nostro pubblico con proposte inusuali e diverse dal solito.
- Oltre alla musica, quali altre attività e installazioni saranno presenti durante il festival? Ci sono workshop o laboratori che gli ospiti potranno sperimentare?
Un'altra collaborazione fondamentale è proprio legata al lato Arte: per questa prima edizione di Mistica Sounds siamo insieme alla nostra amata Operativa Arte Contemporanea, che per festeggiare i suoi 10 anni di attività sbarca anche al Borgo della Mistica portando installazioni e laboratori. Ci saranno i Parasite 2.0 con un'installazione che trasformeremo insieme in un accogliente e deflagrante spazio dedicato a bere... shot! Ci sarà un laboratorio di pittura per ventagli curato da Emiliano Maggi e Cristina Piciacchia: così ci si potrà sventolare ognuno con un proprio ventaglio. E i braceri di Giuseppe Gallo illumineranno le notti stellate del Borgo durante Mistica Sounds.
- Come descriveresti l'esperienza complessiva del Mistica Sounds Festival in tre parole?

From 7 to 9 July, in the Borgo della Mistica, the first edition of Mistica Sounds Festival arrives in Rome. An ambitious project, in a bucolic setting and with the possibility of staying inside the structure - an absolute unicum for Rome. Three days to live non-stop, in line with international immersive festivals: as international is the programming of Mistica Sounds. From the fiery live of MC Yallah & Debmaster to the new project of Lamusa II and Assembly Group, passing through the new forms of world music pursued by Bluemarina, the avant-industrial-hiphop of Sara Persico and Owais.
Organiser and demiurge of Mistica Sounds is Toni Cutrone - better known to music fans surely as Mai Mai Mai - with whom we exchanged a few words on the eve of the festival, to reveal more about this new project in the capital.
- How did the idea of creating the Mistica Sounds Festival in the countryside of Rome, in the picturesque Borgo della Mistica, come about?
Rome is famous for having so many breathtaking locations and it is always pleasant and exciting to go in search of new places to organise events. The collaboration with Borgo Della Mistica started a year ago and from the very first party we realised it was the right place to organise something unique for Rome. Surrounded by nature, agro pontino landscape, Alexandrian aqueduct, olive groves, old farmhouses. It seems something impossible to have such a situation but within the city... and yet here we are!
- What is the main concept you want to express through this festival? What makes Mistica Sounds unique compared to other music events?
The basic idea is to organise an immersive festival, in nature but at the same time inside Rome. A festival that can be experienced for three consecutive days from morning to night, with the opportunity to sleep inside the event (this year inside the Hotel, part of the Borgo della Mistica, with which we have structured special offers, reduced prices and the 'a room for a ticket' deal, for which those who book a room have a free festival day pass). This option for a festival in Rome is certainly unique and the plan for future editions is to develop it by also creating an equipped camping area. The musical and extra-musical content then does the rest!
- Let's talk about the line-up. How did you select the artists who will participate in the first edition of the festival? What criteria did you adopt in the selection?
We try to bring musicians who rarely (or never) come to town to offer something special and different from the usual events. We have fished around the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa, which we consider to be among the most stimulating and electrifying at the moment. We chose from the Italian scene what we consider to be the freshest. And we have combined this line-up with what in Rome most represents our mood and attitude. Obviously to do something comprehensive would have required a summer-long festival. This is just a taste of three days, which we will then continue throughout the year with our work around the city, and which we will continue in 2024 with the second edition of Mistica Sounds.
- Is there a name in the line-up that you are particularly proud of? And why?
There are many, or I could say all, names that we are happy and proud of. Choosing one, we are certainly delighted to have Voices from The Lake: Donato Dozzy and Neel are two great musicians and icons of the Roman and international scene, but you hardly ever see them play together live in the city. When they gave me the OK to do the live show at the festival, it was a mixed moment of euphoria and enthusiasm! And it will be even more so during their set.
- Saturday will see the co-curatorship of Ortigia Sound System and Radio Alhara, with a focus on new sound routes in the Mediterranean/Middle East area. What is the aim of this special day?
This collaboration materialises a network that has already existed for some time: made up of people who work in the music/art world with a similar outlook on the present and the future. We have long been passionate about productions rooted in their own traditions and cultures, reworking them in a contemporary key, with a research approach. The Mediterranean represents a cultural basin in great ferment, especially in the underground crossed by new currents that start from the bottom, but often arrive in Europe with difficulty, cut off from properly western dynamics. The idea of curating one of the days of Mistica Sounds together starts precisely from this common outlook and interest: Radio Alhara, based in Palestine, represents a fresh, stimulating and constantly evolving network. Ortigia Sound System is one of the strongest and most interesting realities in Italy, strongly localised in their homeland, Sicily, but with an international reach and a truly outstanding taste in selection. We have been in contact and collaborating on various things for some time: co-curating the lineup for Saturday 8 July together was a way of concretising this already existing collaboration.
- Especially in recent years, the Roman scene has been stingy with festivals. How do you imagine Mistica Sounds can influence the city's musical reality?
We do not presume to think we influence the Roman music scene. But for years we have been doing work that certainly stimulates and nourishes it: bringing to the city what we think is freshest and most electrifying, or great names from the past that represent seminal influences. And mixing these proposals with what we think is most representative and interesting about Rome. From this union we hope a drive to grow and improve will arise, a drive to network or even 'simply' to entertain our audience with unusual and different proposals.
- Besides music, what other activities and installations will be present during the festival? Are there workshops or laboratories that guests will be able to experience?
Another fundamental collaboration is on the Art side: for this first edition of Mistica Sounds we are together with our beloved Operativa Arte Contemporanea, which to celebrate its 10 years of activity also lands at Borgo della Mistica bringing installations and workshops. There will be Parasite 2.0 with an installation that we will transform together into a cosy and deflagrating space dedicated to drinking... shots! There will be a fan-painting workshop curated by Emiliano Maggi and Cristina Piciacchia: so everyone can fan themselves with their own fan. And Giuseppe Gallo's braziers will light up the starry nights in the Borgo during Mistica Sounds.
- How would you describe the overall experience of the Mistica Sounds Festival in three words?
Stimulating - Immersive - Fresh
