"Keeping techno safe since 2006": report da Viana do Castelo, la Sforzinda della musica elettronica.
Per una volta all'anno Viana do Castelo, una tranquilla cittadina della costa settentrionale portoghese, si tramuta nella Capital of Techno: merito di Neopop, il festival di musica elettronica che dal 10 al 13 agosto ha celebrato la sua 15esima - e tanto agognata - edizione. Nella nostra precedente intervista Gu-stavo, uno dei fondatori della rassegna, ci aveva giustamente corretto all'ora di definire Neopop come un festival "techno-only". Effettivamente è vero: la lineup, anche in questa edizione, era variegata e spaziava tra tutti i vari sottogeneri dell'elettronica e non solo. Sulla carta. Perché nella realtà dei fatti, gli artisti vengono a Viana do Castelo a martellare letteralmente come mastri ferrai. Come quando si prepara la valigia per una settimana in alta montagna - o in Scandinavia, e ci si premura di portare con sé la roba più pesante che si ha: così è come mi immagino gli artisti preparare la propria valigia di dischi in vista di Neopop.
E che artisti! E artiste: Neopop si fregia di essere un festival genre-balance: decisione lodevole, ma di non facile attuazione, considerando il proverbiale androcentrismo della galassia techno. A Viana do Castelo c'era dunque tutto il gotha dell'elettronica: le nostre amiche Adiel e Paula Temple, e poi Nina, Peggy Gou, Courtesy, Anastasia Kristensen, Dr.Rubinstein, Daria Kolosova.
A questo parterre de rois - anzi, di regine - è d'uopo aggiungere Diana Oliveira: la lusitana, resident dell'Industria Club, è davvero fortissima, ha un set molto convincente e merita il respiro internazionale delle sopracitate.
Gli amici di DJMag Italia hanno una volta definito Neopop "il festival che non finisce mai": effettivamente, impossibile lamentarsi per l'early closing. La timetable andava spedita fino alle 9 del mattino, mentre la quarta e ultima serata avrebbe dovuto concludersi a mezzogiorno. The Wizard Jeff Mills ha avuto un problema con i voli? Nessun problema: si "shiftano" gli orari e si finisce alle 14. Occasione per un improvvisato Neopop Soundsystem con un b2b2b2b tra tutti i ragazzi della casa, e un doveroso omaggio a Magazino, fisicamente assente ma sempre con noi: "Now and Forever You will always be with us".
Orari da Berghain, decibel in uscita da Monegros, ma è bene ricordare che Neopop non si svolge nè a Berlino nè in mezzo al deserto, bensì nel porto di una cittadina di 60.000 abitanti, in pieno centro abitato: sarebbe carino sapere cosa ne pensano del progetto, dati alla mano, gli amministratori locali nostrani che danno i permessi ai festival Made in Italy.
Tant'è, dopo due anni di pausa, questa edizione doveva essere speciale, e il quindicesimo capitolo di Neopop è stato, a tutti gli effetti, il migliore di sempre. Il migliore finora, si intende: Gu-stavo e compagni hanno già annunciato la prossima edizione di Neopop, dal 10 al 12 agosto 2023. Mano alle agende, ed appuntamento al prossimo anno: nella Capital of Techno, obviamente!

For once a year, Viana do Castelo, a quiet town on Portugal's northern coast, turns into the Capital of Techno: credit to Neopop, the electronic music festival that celebrated its 15th - and much-coveted - edition from Aug. 10-13. In our previous interview Gu-stavo, one of the festival's founders, had rightly corrected us at the time to define Neopop as a "techno-only" festival. Indeed it is true: the lineup, even in this edition, was diverse and ranged across all the various subgenres of electronica and beyond. On paper. Because in the reality of the facts, the artists come to Viana do Castelo literally hammering away like iron masters. Just like when you pack your suitcase for a week in the high mountains-or in Scandinavia, and you take care to bring along the heaviest stuff you have: this is how I imagine artists packing their suitcase of records ahead of Neopop.
And what artists! And artists: Neopop prides itself on being a genre-balance festival: a laudable decision, but not an easy one to implement, considering the proverbial androcentrism of the techno galaxy. So in Viana do Castelo there was the whole electronic elite: our friends Adiel and Paula Temple, and then Nina, Peggy Gou, Courtesy, Anastasia Kristensen, Dr.Rubinstein, Daria Kolosova.
To this parterre de rois - nay, of queens - it is appropriate to add Diana Oliveira: the Lusitanian, resident of Industria Club, is really cool, has a very convincing set and deserves the international breath of the above-mentioned.
Friends of DJMag Italy once called Neopop "the festival that never ends": indeed, impossible to complain about the early closing. The timetable was going until 9 a.m., while the fourth and final night was supposed to end at noon. Did The Wizard Jeff Mills have a problem with flights? No problem: you "shift" the timetable and end at 2 p.m. Occasion for an impromptu Neopop Soundsystem with a b2b2b2b between all the guys in the house, and a fitting tribute to Magazino, physically absent but always with us: "Now and Forever You will always be with us."
Hours from Berghain, decibels coming out of Monegros, but it's good to remember that Neopop takes place neither in Berlin nor in the middle of the desert, but in the harbor of a town of 60,000 inhabitants, right in the middle of the town: it would be nice to know what our local administrators who give permits to Made in Italy festivals think of the project, data in hand.
So be it, after a two-year hiatus, this edition had to be special, and the 15th installment of Neopop was, for all intents and purposes, the best ever. The best so far, we mean: Gu-stavo and co. have already announced the next edition of Neopop, August 10-12, 2023. Hand to the diaries, and see you next year: in the Capital of Techno, obviously!
