L'edizione di esordio di Mistica Sounds Festival, dal 7 al 9 luglio, ha sancito un nuovo inizio per il primo festival musicale svoltosi nelle campagne romane, e un nuovo benchmark per quello che dovrebbe essere un festival boutique nel perimetro urbano. Limitrofo al raccordo, ma in un contesto quanto mai bucolico come quello di Tenuta della Mistica: immersa nel verde, frinire di cicale, vini naturali e biopiscina. L'hotel a due passi ha permesso ai partecipanti di immergersi interamente nell'atmosfera di Mistica, in contrapposizione con quella dinamica "mordi e fuggi" tipica dei festival urbani. “L’aspetto più bello e significativo è stato quello della condivisione” – racconta Toni Cutrone di Gruppo Chimera, ideatore e curatore del festival – i diversi momenti che pubblico e artisti hanno condiviso insieme, il quotidiano fatto di colazioni, pranzi, cene, i momenti di scambio, le installazioni partecipate di arte contemporanea, e le notti in cui abbiamo messo al centro la musica, sono stati un vero valore aggiunto dell’esperienza”.
Al centro la musica, come dice Toni: la prima edizione di Mistica ha visto una lineup tutt'altro che scontata. Dalla prima serata con il live di Voices from the Lake aka Neel e Donato Dozzy, due pretoriani della scena romana che è però sempre più raro vedere all'opera con questo progetto a queste latitudini, a maggior ragione supportati dalla potenzialità di uno scintillante sound system firmato Funktion One.
Sulla qualità sonora di Mistica Sounds Festival va aperta una parentesi: spesso parole chiave come "boutique" "intimo", "immersivo" fanno rima con impianti dozzinali, o con delle torrette con delle case line poco coerenti con la programmazione e, diciamolo, un po' cafone. Non è il caso del rendez vous romano: alla precisione britannica dell'impianto Funktion One sullo stage "by night" in mezzo ai casali, faceva da contrappunto l'eccellenza artigianale (made in Macerata) della Bass Unity del palco diurno.
E quando si dice "diurno", si intende con il sole molto alto: gli act a MSF iniziano presto. La domenica addirittura alle 10,30 con la ninfa cyborg Francesca Hearth, e alle 12 il sabato con Fukinsei - a proposito di cultura del sound system. La programmazione della giornata dell'8, la seconda del festival, merita menzione a parte: un focus sulle nuove rotte sonore dell’area mediterranea / mediorientale di assoluto spessore, grazie anche alla co-curatela di due realtà come Ortigia Sound System e Radio Alhara. Partita con Fukinsei, terminata con Nziria, e culminata con il set del produttore tunisino Sofyan Ben Youssef aka Ammar 808, il soldato interstellare impegnato nella missione di ricerca dei "Lowest-Bass possible", soldato che vorrei al mio fianco nel campo di battaglia di ogni festival.
Sull'arco delle tre giornate di MSF, le incursioni diurne dei Salò, il camaleontico progetto- band di Toni Cutrone/Mai Mai Mai, Giacomo Mancini, Stefano Di Trapani, Cosimo Damiano ed Emiliano Maggi: bello vedere spuntare la loro performance situazionista tra un live e un dj set a Mistica, così come sarà bello rivederli nell'arco dell'estate - il 30 a Ortigia, ça va sans dire.
Last but not least, il live domenicale di Khalab, uno dei primi nomi che viene in mente quando si parla di world music e suoni mediterranei, e non per inconsci collegamenti mentali ma per meriti acquisiti sul campo. La performance di Raffaele è stata l'occasione per un'anteprima del suo nuovo album Layers, in uscita per Hyperjazz, un'ode al fare musica come forma d'arte collettiva. Per chi non c'era a Mistica Sounds, in attesa che il disco esca il 25 agosto, da ascoltare la già rilasciata title-track in featuring con Joshua Idehen. E per chi non c'era a Mistica Sounds: male, molto male, rimediare assolutamente alla prossima edizione. Buona la prima, ragazzi: ci vediamo alla Tenuta nel 2024.

The debut edition of Mistica Sounds Festival, from 7 to 9 July, marked a new beginning for the first music festival held in the Roman countryside, and a new benchmark for what should be a boutique festival in the urban perimeter. Bordered by the ring road, but in the bucolic setting of Tenuta della Mistica: surrounded by greenery, chirping cicadas and a bio-pool. The hotel on the doorstep allowed participants to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere of Mistica, as opposed to the 'hit and run' dynamic typical of urban festivals. "The most beautiful and meaningful aspect was the sharing," says Toni Cutrone of Gruppo Chimera, the festival's creator and curator. "The different moments that the public and artists shared together, the daily routine of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, the moments of exchange, the participatory contemporary art installations, and the nights when we put music at the centre, were a real added value of the experience.
The focus was on music, as Toni says: the first edition of Mistica saw a line-up that was anything but predictable. From the first evening with the live performance of Voices from the Lake aka Neel and Donato Dozzy, two praetorians of the Roman scene whom it is increasingly rare to see at work with this project at these latitudes, all the more supported by the potential of a sparkling sound system signed Funktion One.
A parenthesis must be opened on the sound quality of Mistica Sounds Festival: often key words such as 'boutique', 'intimate', 'immersive' rhyme with cheesy systems, or with case line turrets that are inconsistent with the programming and, let's face it, a bit boorish. This was not the case at the Roman rendez vous: the British precision of the Funktion One system on the 'by night' stage amidst the farmhouses was counterpointed by the handcrafted excellence (made in Macerata) of Bass Unity on the daytime stage.
And when we say 'daytime', we mean with the sun very high: the acts at MSF start early. On Sunday even at 10.30 a.m. with the cyborg nymph Francesca Hearth, and at 12 noon on Saturday with Fukinsei - talking about sound system culture. The programming of the day of the 8th, the second of the festival, deserves a separate mention: a focus on the new sound routes of the Mediterranean / Middle Eastern area of absolute depth, thanks also to the co-curatorship of two realities such as Ortigia Sound System and Radio Alhara. It started with Fukinsei, ended with Nziria, and culminated with a set by Tunisian producer Sofyan Ben Youssef aka Ammar 808, the interstellar soldier on a mission to find the "Lowest-Bass possible", a soldier I would like to have at my side in the battlefield of every festival.
Over the three days of the MSF, the daytime incursions of Salò, the chameleon-like band-project of Toni Cutrone/Mai Mai Mai, Giacomo Mancini, Stefano Di Trapani, Cosimo Damiano and Emiliano Maggi: nice to see their situationist performance pop up between a live show and a DJ set at Mistica, just as it will be nice to see them again over the summer - on the 30th at Ortigia, ça va sans dire.
Last but not least, the Sunday live performance by Khalab, one of the first names that comes to mind when talking about world music and Mediterranean sounds, not because of unconscious mental connections but because of merits acquired in the field. His performance was the occasion for a preview of his new album Layers, forthcoming from Hyperjazz, an ode to music-making as a collective art form. For those who were not there at Mistica Sounds, while waiting for the album to be released on 25 August, listen to the already released title track featuring Joshua Idehen.
