"Trust" è una testimonianza di resilienza.
Gli ultimi due anni sono stati difficili per tutti, e anche se sarebbe stato facile per Catnapp lasciare che i sentimenti di disperazione si impregnassero nel suo processo creativo lei si è rifiutata di soccombere nell'oscurità.
L'artista argentina con base a Berlino è stata determinata a realizzare qualcosa di luminoso, energico ed edificante, e nulla, nemmeno una catastrofe globale, è stata in grado di farle cambiare idea.
Nemmeno una pandemia le ha impedito di radunare la gente nel dancefloor.
Il suo nuovo LP è pieno di ganci pop futuristici, ma Trust offre molto di più. È un disco che sfonda i confini di genere, assorbendo pezzi ad alta velocità di hip-hop, R&B, rave e persino numetal.
Tantissime le collaborazioni all'interno dell'album: Modeselektor, suo fratello Wilo, Aamourocean e l'argentina O.L.I.V.I.A.
Una vera e propria rappresentazione della vita moderna: Trust nasce da anni di pensieri e di un lungo percorso di self-confidence. Un disco che entra nello spazio mentale di chi ascolta in cuffia mentre svolge la propria giornata, una vera e propria iniezione di pura energia.
TRUST: Partiamo dal nome dell'album, puoi farci sapere da dove è nata la scelta di questo nome?
Farò del mio meglio per essere il più breve possibile. Si tratta principalmente del concetto di fiducia. La fiducia negli altri, ma ancora di più in me stessa.
Negli ultimi anni la fiducia in me è cresciuta molto. Credo che la fiducia faccia parte della crescita di ognuno di noi. Ho fatto tantissima terapia negli ultimi anni riguardo questo tema: fin da piccola ho avuto grossi problemi nel fidarmi completamente delle persone, derivante ovviamente da delle brutte esperienze che ho passato.
Solitamente all’inizio della creazione di un album rifletto subito sui temi da trattare ma non riesco mai ad avere una totale libertà creativa quando mi impongo delle cose. Preferisco essere libera di poter scrivere e parlare di argomenti che in un determinato momento mi trasmettono determinate sensazioni.
Nel caso di “Trust” una volta completate la scrittura delle canzoni e l’album mi sono resa conto che c’erano tantissime canzoni in cui si parlava di fiducia. In quel momento ho capito che il nome perfetto per questo disco doveva essere un qualcosa basato sulla fiducia, è un vero e proprio viaggio alla scoperta della persona che sono.
MUSICA: Hip-hop, pop futuristico, r&b, rave music: qual è il messaggio dietro la scelta di sperimentare tutti questi generi?
Non c’è un vero e proprio messaggio pre-intenzionato. La creazione dell’album è stato un processo molto naturale e genuino. Non ho mai pensato di voler fare un disco esclusivamente rnb o pop piuttosto che altri generi. Ho soltanto voluto fare quello che sentivo. Il messaggio che c’è dietro è sicuramente il fare le cose in totale libertà. Fate quello che sentite. Si tratta di musica, di arte. Non è necessario che sia sempre tutto premeditato, o legato al marketing.
COLLABORAZIONI: all'interno dell'album ci sono molte collaborazioni. Com'è stato lavorare con così tanti artisti e perché hai deciso di farlo?
Credo che sia molto importante collaborare. Sono sempre molto propensa alle collaborazioni. E’ bellissimo poter condividere le proprie idee con gli altri e viceversa. La sorpresa è sempre dietro l’angolo.
Essendo un’artista molto spesso mi ritrovo a produrre e a comporre delle canzoni che ritengo possano essere cuciti su misura per un altro artista. Un’altra cosa è sicuramente l’ispirazione che possono darti gli altri. Mi piace sempre definirmi una “fan” di altri, e sai, il sogno più grande di una fan è quello di poter collaborare con quegli artisti che porti nel cuore.
Alcuni degli artisti dell’album sono argentini, è incredibile poter scoprire questi nuovi movimenti creativi, è super stimolante. Credo che il confronto con gli altri sia molto importante per la creatività.
LINGUA: Per la prima volta hai realizzato un brano nella tua lingua madre. Perché hai deciso di farlo? Questo album è molto sperimentale. Tu hai deciso di tornare alle tue origini: qual è stata l'idea alla base?
In realtà ho fatto un brano qualche anno fa con alcune parole in spagnolo. Questa volta Olivia mio ha aiutata moltissimo nell’avvicinarmi alla mia lingua natale.
Sai, con l’inglese mi sento molto più a mio agio. Con lo spagnolo è come se alzassi la mia musica ad un livello successivo, più profondo.
Anche con solo una piccola frase, lo spagnolo rende tutto più intimo, più personale. Ogni volta che canto queste canzoni sento che vengono dal profondo del cuore, mi riesce anche difficile non piangere ogni volta che le canto.
IDENTITÀ VISIVA: in questo nuovo album l'identità visiva è molto forte. Ci racconti la storia dietro la copertina dell'album?
La copertina dell’album è stato un lavoro molto lungo. L’idea principale era quella di far capire alle persone cosa provo quando scrivo certe canzoni. E’ un’idea che ho in mente da tantissimi anni e finalmente sono riuscita a realizzarla. Ho pensato di ricreare la mia stanza nella maniera più naturale possibile.
Ho cercato di rappresentare quella che sono, attraverso l’utilizzo di illustrazioni, fantasmi e pupazzi legati alla mia adolescenza.
E’ stato un percorso per definire quella che sono attraverso l’utilizzo di immagini legate alla mia persona.
FASHION WORLD: alcuni dei tuoi abiti sono stati realizzati dalla stilista Valentina Dezanche, qual è il tuo rapporto con la moda? Pensa che gli abiti possano diffondere un messaggio?
Nella cura dell’outfit vale lo stesso discorso che nella musica. E’ molto interessante collaborare con dei fashion designer. E’ come dire: “okay questa è la mia musica, tu occupati del vestiti”. Era da molto tempo che volevo collaborare con lei. Adoro le sue illustrazioni, il suo modo di lavorare. Ho avuto la fortuna di conoscerla durante un concerto di Myss Keta a Berlino. Rende il tutto molto più completo. Per il tour di “Trust” avrò dei vestiti curati da un designer che ha customizzato alcuni vestiti del brand A BETTER MISTAKE. Sono sempre molto aperta all’unione della mia musica con altre arti: designers, ballerini, illustratori, etc. Ho voluto creare qualcosa di speciale anche per quanto riguarda gli outfits.
LIVE PERFORMANCE: sei tornata in tournée. Trust sarà suonato dal vivo nei prossimi mesi in tutto il mondo. Non sarà un semplice concerto, ma una vera e propria performance. Cosa dovrà aspettarsi la gente da questa nuova performance?
Con questa performance ho voluto portare sul palco l’artwork della cover dell’album. Ci saranno moltissime cose con me sul palco. Sarà un’esperienza molto speciale. Non posso aggiungere altro :)

"Trust" is a testimony to resilience. The past two years have been difficult for everyone, and although it would have been easy for Catnapp to let feelings of despair soak into her creative process she refused to succumb to the darkness.
The Berlin-based Argentine artist was determined to make something bright, energetic and uplifting, and nothing, not even a global catastrophe, was able to change her mind.
Not even a global catastrophe has stopped her from rallying people to the dancefloor.
Her new LP is full of futuristic pop hooks, but Trust offers so much more. It is a record that breaks through genre boundaries, absorbing high-speed chunks of hip-hop, R&B, rave and even numetal.
Lots of collaborations within the album: Modeselektor, his brother Wilo, Aamourocean and the argentinian O.L.I.V.I.A.
A true representation of modern life, Trust was born out of years of thought and a long journey of self-confidence. A record that enters the mental space of the listener on headphones as he goes about his day, a real injection of pure energy.
TRUST : Starting from the name of the album, can you please let us know from where it came from?
I will do my best to be as brief as possible. It is mainly about the concept of trust. Confidence in others, but even more so in myself. In the last few years, confidence in myself has grown a lot. I think confidence is part of everyone's growth. I have done a lot of therapy over the last few years regarding this issue: from a very young age I had big problems trusting people completely, stemming of course from bad experiences I went through. Usually at the beginning of creating an album I immediately reflect on the themes to be covered but I can never have total creative freedom when I impose things on myself. I prefer to be free to be able to write and talk about topics that at a given moment convey certain feelings to me. In the case of "Trust" once I had completed the songwriting and the album I realized that there were so many songs in it about trust. At that moment I realized that the perfect name for this record had to be something based on trust, it's a real journey of discovering the person I am.
MUSIC: Hip-hop, futuristic pop, r&b, rave music: What’s the message behind the choice of experimenting with all those genres?
There is no real pre-intended message. The creation of the album was a very natural and genuine process. I never thought I wanted to make an album exclusively rnb or pop rather than other genres. I just wanted to do what I felt. The message behind it is definitely about doing things in total freedom. Do what you feel. It's about music, it's about art. It doesn't always have to be premeditated, or tied to marketing
COLLABORATIONS: inside the album there’re lots of collaborations. How was working with so many artists and why did you decide to do that?
I think it is very important to collaborate. I'm always very keen on collaborations. It's great to be able to share your ideas with others and vice versa. The surprise is always around the corner. Being an artist very often I find myself producing and composing songs that I think can be tailor-made for another artist. Another thing is definitely the inspiration that others can give you. I always like to call myself a "fan" of others, and you know, the biggest dream of a fan is to be able to collaborate with those artists you carry in your heart. Some of the artists on the album are from Argentina, it's amazing to be able to discover these new creative movements, it's super inspiring. I think the comparison with others is very important for creativity.
LANGUAGE: For the first time ever you made a track in your native language. Why did you decide to do that? This album seems to be so experimental and you decide to come back to your origins: what was the idea behind it?
I actually did a piece a few years ago with some words in Spanish. This time Olivia helped me a lot in approaching my native language. You know, with English I feel much more comfortable. With Spanish it's like I raise my music to a next level, deeper. Even just a little phrase, Spanish makes everything more intimate, more personal. Every time I sing these songs I feel that they come from the depths of my heart, I also find it hard not to cry every time I sing them.
VISUAL IDENTITY: more than ever, in this new album the visual identity is so strong. Can you please let us know what’s behind the cover of the album?
The album cover was a very long work. The main idea was to make people understand how I feel when I write certain songs. It's an idea I've had in my mind for many, many years, and I finally managed to realize it. I thought of recreating my room in the most natural way possible. I tried to represent who I am through the use of illustrations, ghosts and puppets related to my adolescence. It was a path to define who I am through the use of images related to who I am.
FASHION WORLD: some of your outfits were made by the designer Valentina Dezanche, what is your relationship with fashion? Do you think clothes can spread a message?
The same applies in outfit curation as in music. It's very interesting to collaborate with fashion designers. It's like, "okay this is my music, you take care of the clothes." I've wanted to collaborate with her for a long time. I love her illustrations, her way of working. I was lucky enough to meet her during a Myss Keta concert in Berlin. It makes the whole thing so much more complete. For the "Trust" tour I will have clothes curated by a designer who customized some clothes from the "A better mistake" brand. I am always very open to the union of my music with other arts: designers, dancers, illustrators, etc. I also wanted to create something special in terms of outfits.
Live performance: you’re now touring. Trust will be played live in the next months around the world. It will be not just a concert but a real performance. What people should expect from it? How do you feel touring back?
With this performance I wanted to bring the album cover artwork to the stage. There will be a lot of things with me on stage. It will be a very special experience. That's all I can say!
