POSITIVE EDUCATION: UN PUBBLICO RARO PER UNA RARA LINEUP

Se negli ultimi anni avete sintonizzato le vostre orecchie su tutta quella falange elettronica esplosa dal sottosuolo francese, sicuramente avete messo Positive Education Festival tra le vostre mete per il 2023.

E se non l’avete ancora fatto, beh, vi spieghiamo perché siete ancora - appena - in tempo per comprare gli ultimi tickets rimasti per questa settima edizione.

Partiamo dalla venue: dal 31 ottobre al 5 novembre, si svolgerà quella che sarà l’ultima edizione di PEF nella sua storica venue, l'ex fabbrica di munizioni di Saint-Etienne, Cité du Design. La cattedrale è un luogo senza tempo, che da sei edizioni riunisce un pubblico raro. Perché a PEF è assolutamente la proposta artistica a fare la selezione all’ingresso. Sei un appassionato di IDM, bass music, break, trance, techno, broken rhythm, stranezze oscure e inquietanti iniezioni leftfield? Hai appena trovato il tuo luogo felice. Quindi… ‘don’t forget 2 go home’, come urlano i muri a Berlino.

Una programmazione per orecchie audaci, per quelle che dentro la musica elettronica ci vogliono stare sul serio, che ne hanno colto il lato edonistico ma allo stesso tempo l’importanza socio-culturale. Pubblico raro, richiama una direzione artistica stimolante ed appassionata: ci saranno infatti due bass-heads per eccellenza, Objekt & Skee Mask e rimanendo in tema b2b anche Jennifer Cardini - che abbiamo incontrato all’OFFSónar - con Pablo Bozzi e il b2b di Zohar & NVST che promette di farvi ballare e sudare come pochi altri. Ma anche nuovi promettenti talenti che hanno attirato l’attenzione di Aphex Twin come KAVARI e assolute certezze come Donato Dozzy, FJAAK, Monolake, Scotch Rolex & Shackleton e una bella scuderia di artisti francesi, che sicuramente rappresentato il grande core di PEF. Dimenticavo, ci saranno anche una serie di act imperdibili come Amnesia Scanner & Freeka Tet, Danse Musique Rhône-Alpe e DJ Bus Replacement Service.

La storia di PEF è partita nel 2015 e oggi, sette anni dopo, si prevede un'affluenza di pubblico raddoppiata rispetto all'inizio, così il festival ha deciso di fare passo avanti aggiungendo un'altra edizione. La grande novità 2023 è infatti l'aggiunta del formato diurno nella “ephemeral hall”. Questo spazio diurno ospiterà la serata inaugurale di martedì 31 ottobre, nonché la serata di apertura del festival.

Grazie al day-time, PEF si posiziona in questa edizione ancora più che nelle altre, come amplificatore di talenti. Ogni giorno sarà dedicato ad un tema, come per esempio musica d’ambiente e derivati del rock il mercoledì o hip-hop con il coreografo e rapper inglese Blackhaine.

La sede diurna sarà anche il punto d'incontro per i workshop dedicati alla produzione musicale e per i panel volti al dialogo tra i professionisti del settore, sfruttando l’opportunità di parlare di etichette, festival e dell’industria musicale.

Duranti gli anni PEF ha attirato l'attenzione di artisti e addetti ai lavori, guadagnandosi il pin sulla mappa come un festival imperdibile per lo sguardo verso il futuro e una strabiliante parafrasi della musica che oggi le persone stanno amando di più. Abbiamo incontrato Charles Di Falco (fondatore e co-direttore artistico) e Antoine Hernandez (co-direttore artistico) per farci svelare gli ingredienti segreti di un festival così capace di immortalare il presente.

Grandi progetti progetti come Positive Education spesso nascondono un bisogno più profondo che deve essere espresso. Qual è stato l'impulso che ha dato vita a Positive Education?

L'impulso iniziale ha avuto molteplici sfaccettature. In primo luogo, avvertivamo un senso di stanchezza nei confronti della musica, degli headliner e delle tendenze mainstream, che possono apparire rapidamente banali a un consumatore compulsivo di musica. Abbiamo sentito la necessità di cercare fonti di ispirazione innovative per rompere la monotonia delle line-up, permettendo al pubblico di scoprire qualcosa di nuovo. Volevamo offrire piccoli eventi in cui la musica sfidasse le nostre norme e riuscisse a sorprenderci.

Oltre a questo, volevamo impegnarci a plasmare "il-mondo-di-domani" adottando una posizione che fosse responsabile ma che allo stesso tempo potessimo spingere il più lontano possibile.

Oltre al notevole supporto della scena francese, è il risultato delle vostre influenze personali?

La scelta della line-up per noi è una passione quotidiana. Scopriamo continuamente nuovi artisti in un'ampia gamma di estetiche musicali. Per quanto riguarda Positive Education, lavoriamo con tre palchi notturni e un palco diurno, ottenendo come il risultato una miscela organizzata di circa quindici estetiche diverse. Inizialmente creiamo una lista di artisti che desideriamo invitare, iniziando in genere con gli headliner e costruendo poi il resto della line-up una volta confermati.

Ci sforziamo di evolverci il più possibile in sincronia con la scena francese fin dalla nostra nascita. Non ci limitiamo a un circuito conservatore e riconosciamo che i gusti si evolvono, il che non è necessariamente vero per la scena musicale in generale.

Quest'anno si aggiungerà un programma diurno. Cosa dobbiamo aspettarci da questa novità per l'edizione 2023?

Vogliamo ampliare il nostro raggio d'azione offrendo una nuova esperienza d'ascolto incentrata sull'attenzione piuttosto che sulla danza, con musica meno orientata al club ma che consideriamo eccezionale. Daremo il via alla settimana con un'inaugurazione ad accesso libero, che prevede un concerto gratuito di Carl Gay e Abdulah Miniawy. A partire da mercoledì, le giornate saranno caratterizzate da tematiche estetiche che spaziano dall'ambient al dub, dall'hip-hop al rock. Il programma diurno prevede anche workshop con Ableton e tavole rotonde su temi che ci stanno a cuore, con relatori di Ninja Tune, Sónar, Bassiani, Parkingstone, oltre ad artisti come Anetha e Jennifer Cardini.

Raccontaci due momenti che hanno segnato particolarmente il vostro percorso con PEF (qualcosa di bello ed emozionante e un momento di difficoltà).

Ci sono stati così tanti momenti da ricordare che è difficile sceglierne solo due. Tra i momenti belli ed emozionanti, spicca il set di chiusura con Eris Drew & Octo Octa, dove un'ondata di amore ha avvolto il festival in modo unico. Un altro momento indimenticabile è stata l'esibizione degli African Head Charge senza palco, con il pubblico raccolto intorno a loro, creando un'energia incredibile. Ce ne sono molti altri, tra cui l'eccezionale performance di The Bug e Flowdan nel 2022, dove l'atmosfera era così elettrizzante e i bassi così potenti da far tremare l'edificio, provocando persino la caduta di oggetti dal piano superiore. Per quanto riguarda i momenti di difficoltà, il momento più impegnativo in termini di programmazione è stata la sfortunata cancellazione della performance di Sophie, per i motivi che tutti conosciamo. In generale, la difficoltà principale è soprattutto sul fronte economico, con il timore di non poter organizzare una nuova edizione del festival.

POSITIVE EDUCATION: A RARE CROWD FOR A RARE LINEUP

Let's start with the venue: from 21 October to 5 November, what will be the last edition of PEF will take place in its historic venue, the former Saint-Etienne munitions factory of the Cité du Design.

Two bass heads par excellence will be on stage, Objekt & Skee Mask and, staying on the matter of b2b, also Jennifer Cardini - whom we met at OFFSónar - and the b2b of Zohar & NVST who promise to make you dance and sweat like few others.

But also promising new talents who have attracted the attention of Aphex Twin like Kavari and absolute certainties like Donato Dozzy, FJAAK, Monolake, Scotch Rolex & Shackleton and a fine stable of French artists, who are sure to represent PEF's great core. Throughout the years PEF has caught the attention of artists and insiders and earned its pin on the map as a must-attend festival for its glimpse into the future and a stunning paraphrase of the music people are loving most today. We caught up with Charles Di Falco (founder and co-artistic director) and Antoine Hernandez (co-artistic director) to reveal the secret ingredients of a festival so capable of capturing the present.

Great projects like Positive Education often conceal a deeper need that needs to be expressed. What was the impulse that gave birth to Positive Education?

The impulse had multiple facets. Firstly, there was a sense of weariness towards the music of headliners and mainstream trends, which can quickly appear mundane to a compulsive music consumer. We felt the need to seek out innovative sources of inspiration to break the monotony of lineups, allowing the audience to discover something new. We wanted to offer small events where music would challenge our norms and surprise us. Additionally, we aimed to engage in shaping the world of tomorrow by adopting a responsible stance and pushing it as far as possible.

PEF is one of those festivals that can satisfy even the most discerning ears. How do you choose the lineup? In addition to substantial support from the French scene, is it a result of your personal influences? Programming is a daily passion for us. We continually discover new artists in a wide range of musical aesthetics. Regarding Positive Education, we work with three nighttime stages and one daytime stage, resulting in an organized blend of approximately fifteen different aesthetics. We maintain lists of artists we wish to invite, typically starting with the headliners, and then constructing the rest of the lineup once they are confirmed.

We strive to evolve in sync with the French scene as much as possible since our inception. We don't confine ourselves to a conservative circuit, and we acknowledge that tastes evolve, which may not necessarily be the case for the music scene at large.

This year there will be the addition of a daytime program. What can we expect from this novelty for the 2023 edition?

We aim to broaden our scope by offering a new listening experience focused on attentiveness rather than dance, featuring music that leans less towards the club but that we consider exceptional. We will kick off the week with an open-access inauguration, featuring a free concert by Carl Gay and Abdulah Miniawy. Starting from Wednesday, the days will feature thematic aesthetics ranging from ambient to dub, hip-hop, and rock. The daytime program will also include workshops with Ableton and panel discussions on topics close to our hearts, featuring speakers from Ninja Tune, Sónar, Bassiani, Parkingstone, as well as artists like Anetha and Jennifer Cardini.

Tell us about two moments that have particularly marked your journey with PEF (

something beautiful and emotional and a moment of difficulty). There have been so many remarkable moments that it's challenging to choose just two. Among the beautiful and emotional moments, the closing set with Eris Drew & Octo Octa, where a wave of love enveloped the festival uniquely, stands out. Another unforgettable moment was the performance by African Head Charge without a stage, with the audience gathered around them, creating an incredible energy. There are many more, including The Bug and Flowdan's outstanding performance in 2022, where the atmosphere was so electrifying, and the bass so powerful that it shook the building, even causing objects to fall from the upper floor. As for a moment of difficulty, the most challenging moment in terms of programming was the unfortunate cancellation of Sophie's performance, for reasons we all know. In general, the main difficulty lies primarily on the economic front, with the fear of not being able to organize a new edition of the festival.
