NUOVO MONDO #2: So Beast - BRILLA (Needn’t, La Tempesta, Blaublau)

Nuovo Mondo parla della diversità senza limiti trasmessa grazie alla musica.

Brilla non è solo una parola ma anche un consiglio. Dalle tenebre oscure post moderne, i So Beast creano uno squarcio luminoso ben delineato da un percorso comune importante. Nati e cresciuti per la seconda volta dentro le vecchie mure dell’Xm24, i So Beast non si fanno piegare dalle tendenze culturali che spopolano il presente. Esiste ancora una speranza e quella speranza siamo noi. Dobbiamo brillare per mostrare e diffondere. Quale modo migliore di farlo se non attraverso la musica?

UFPT • Come nasce “BRILLA”? Katarina • Di getto, abbiamo deciso di fare un disco e lo abbiamo fatto [...] dopo aver vinto un concorso di Panico in Emilia Romagna. Avevamo preparato inizialmente 4 brani, un EP, con un produttore esterno. Non eravamo però soddisfatti del risultato, rappresentava forse il 30% rispetto a quello che noi potevamo pubblicare. Siamo riusciti a far capire a Panico che l’EP non era per noi pubblicabile e che volevamo spendere le nostre energie in un’altra direzione. Loro sono stati super comprensivi nonostante avessero già investito i soldi del bando. Avevamo alcune demo del nuovo disco da fargli ascoltare e glielo abbiamo proposto. Sapevamo anche chi integrare e con chi produrlo; Fight Pausa, la persona dietro la coproduzione e il missaggio [...] Il disco è nato a partire dall’autunno del 2021, periodo in cui abbiamo iniziato per poi mettersi in studio con Fight Pausa nella primavera del 2022.

UFPT • Insomma sapevate non solo che quell’EP non vi rappresentava ma anche di poter dare di meglio [...] Brilla sembra quasi raccontare un percorso fatto di tappe e significati.

Michele • Mentre scrivevamo questi pezzi avevano già una loro identità, portavano con sé un significato. A un certo punto abbiamo messo insieme i vari pezzi dandogli una forma complessiva e solo a quel punto siamo riusciti a dare un senso a larga scala di Brilla…le cose erano già abbastanza chiare fin da subito.

Katarina • Magari alcuni brani erano nati insieme, altri erano nati in un altro periodo, ma comunque rientravano nella nostra visione.

UFPT • Qui entriamo nel succo del discorso…quindi cos’è che Brilla? Katarina • Brilla è un consiglio. Stiamo vivendo in un momento difficilissimo a livello emotivo, politico, ecologico, culturale, è un momento di merda però affrontato con un ottimismo allucinante. Bisogna accettare la realtà però cercare con il proprio percorso di influenzare anche gli altri, di brillare, di spargere questa volontà, questa rivoluzione. Partire con la rivoluzione da te stesso come individuo. UFPT • Brilla in effetti è molto chiaro. Una persona quando brilla è bella come individuo però nello stesso tempo illumina anche i suoi dintorni. Anche la chiarezza fa parte di questo brillare, la fiducia in se stessi.

Katarina • Questa tematica è stata inserita anche visivamente, infatti sulla copertina, pensata da Bureau Mia, c’è un sole con una faccia ansiosa, ma anche incazzata e preoccupata. E’ una simbologia trovata in un libro di storia medievale. La sua espressione si riflette a questa idea del sole in generale che dà la vita a livello biologico ma che ci sta pian piano uccidendo. L’umore cambia se fuori c’è il sole ma nello stesso tempo se fa troppo caldo ci lamentiamo della sua presenza.

UFPT • Il sole raggiunge tutti, esprime libertà…Brilla porta con sé un sacco di collaborazioni, è un disco aperto all’esterno, non è del tutto vostro, con Brilla ringraziate un sacco di persone. So Beast • Ognuna di loro ha contribuito al disco. Sono tanti piccoli incastri conosciuti in diverse occasioni e diventati poi fondamentali per la costruzione di Brilla. Zooey Agro è una musicista, compositrice, suona nella band dei 13 Year Cicada di base a Berlino. E’ un’artista poliedrica con cui abbiamo un legame umano molto forte. Ha partecipato con la sua voce, spesso eterea e fantasy, in 3 brani, Screenlight, Raw Edge e Apparently. Il suo è stato un tocco davvero di classe, siamo davvero felici di aver collaborato con lei.

UFPT • Sono state le varie ciliegine sulle torte. So Beast • Esatto, proprio così…quando scrivevamo Dark ci siamo resi conto di aver bisogno di uno screamo e abbiamo chiesto a Luca Rocco degli STORM {o} che oltre a doppiarci la voce si è sfogato nel finale. Utilizziamo i suoi vocal come sample nei live. Grazie a lui siamo riusciti a sviluppare dei momenti più hyper techno, rave, graffianti. Poi c’è Phillip Theurer, collega di Zooey nei 13 Year Cicada, che partecipa con la batteria in Inadattabilità. Lui ha una formazione jazz, molto free, la sua batteria è servita per comunicare il senso stesso della traccia. In Walkhigh canta Traashboo con cui abbiamo fatto un tour insieme. Loro rappresentano molto la scena queer tedesca. Walkhigh è un doppio gioco, non sta per camminare sballato ma rappresenta l’idea di camminare sui tacchi. Esprime l’idea di orgoglio. Infine le percussioni di Raw Edge sono opera di Fra Zedde aka Tonto che ci ha mandato una registrazione di un’orchestra di percussioni in più tracce che abbiamo tagliato, loopato e combinato le singole sessioni. All’inizio lo abbiamo combinati con i nostri beat poi sul finale gli abbiamo dato più importanza con un flusso di ispirazione al voodoo haitiano.

UFPT • Persino di label vedo una pluralità. So Beast • Needn’t è l’etichetta di Panico, è lo stesso gruppo con cui abbiamo iniziato. La Tempesta Dischi sono entrati quando Brilla era già finito. Dopo che ci hanno sentiti a un concerto si sono appassionati al nostro progetto e hanno voluto investire come editori del disco. Blaublau è invece un collettivo artistico di persone vicine con cui abbiamo condiviso concerti. Tra di noi c’è un supporto artistico…come noi portano avanti una nicchia estetica di cui ci sentiamo molto parte.

So Beast creates a bright glimpse from the dark postmodern darkness well delineated by an essential common path. Born and raised for the second time within the old walls Xm24, So Beast is not bowed by the cultural trends that depopulate the present. There is still hope, and that hope is us.

We must shine to show and spread.

What better way to do that than through music?

UFPT - How was "BRILLIANT" born?

Katarina - On the spur of the moment, we decided to make a record and did it [...] after winning a Panico competition in Emilia Romagna. We had initially prepared four EP tracks with an external producer. However, we were unsatisfied with the result; it represented 30 percent of what we could release. We made Panico understand that the EP was not publishable for us and that we wanted to spend our energy in another direction. They were super understanding even though they had already invested the money from the announcement. We had some demos of the new record for them to listen to, and we proposed it. We also knew who to integrate and who to produce it with; Fight Pausa, the person behind the co-production and mixing [...] The record was born in the fall of 2021 when we started and then got into the studio with Fight Pausa in the spring of 2022.

UFPT - In short, you knew that EP did not represent you and that you could give better [...] Brilla almost seems to tell a story of a path made of stages and meanings.

Michele - While we were writing these pieces, they already had their own identity; they carried with them a meaning. At a certain point, we put the various parts together, giving them an overall shape, and only at that point could we provide a large-scale meaning to Brilla...things were already quite clear from the beginning.

Katarina - Maybe some of the pieces were born together, and others were taken at a different time, but still, they were part of our vision.

UFPT - Here we get into the gist of it...so what is Brilla?

Katarina - Brilla is a council. We are living in a challenging time emotionally, politically, ecologically, and culturally; it is a shitty time, however, approached with a hallucinating optimism. You have to accept reality; however, try with your path to influence others as well, to shine, to spread this will, this revolution. Start with the revolution from yourself as an individual.

UFPT - Shine is evident. A person, when he shines, is beautiful as an individual; however, at the same time, he also illuminates his surroundings. Clarity is also part of this shining self-confidence.

Katarina - This theme was also included visually; on the cover, designed by Bureau Mia, there is a sun with an anxious but also pissed-off and worried face. It is a symbolism found in a medieval history book. His expression reflects this idea of the sun in general, which gives life on a biological level but slowly kills us. The mood changes if it is sunny outside, but at the same time, if it is too hot, we complain about it.

UFPT - Sunshine reaches everyone; it expresses freedom...Brilla brings a lot of collaborations; it's a record that's open to the outside world, and it's not entirely your own; with Brilla, you thank many people.

So Beast - Each of them contributed to the record. It's a lot of little joints that were known on different occasions and then became fundamental to the construction of Brilla. Zooey Agro is a musician and composer who plays in the 13-Year Cicada band based in Berlin. She is a multifaceted artist with whom we have a powerful human connection. She participated with her often ethereal and fantasy voice in 3 tracks, Screenlight, Raw Edge, and Apparently. Hers was a nice touch; we are delighted to have collaborated with her.

UFPT - Those were the various icing on the cake.

So Beast - That's right, that's right...when we were writing Dark, we realized we needed a screamo, and we asked Luca Rocco of STORM {o}, who, in addition to dubbing our vocals, also broke out in the finale. We use his vocals as samples in live performances. Thanks to him, we could develop more hyper-techno, rave, and scratchy moments. Then there is Phillip Theurer, Zooey's colleague in 13 Year Cicada, who participates on drums in Inadaptability. He has a very free jazz background; his drums communicate the meaning of the track. In Walkhigh, he sings Traashboo, with whom we toured together. They represent the German queer scene a lot. Walk High is a double play; it doesn't stand for walking stoned but represents the idea of walking on heels. It expresses the concept of pride. Finally, the percussion on Raw Edge is by Fra Zedde, aka Tonto, who sent us a recording of a multi-track percussion orchestra that we cut, looped, and combined the individual sessions. At first, we combined it with our beats; then, in the final, we gave it more prominence with a Haitian voodoo-inspired flow.

UFPT - Even of labels, I see a plurality.

So Beast - Needn't is Panic's label; it's the same group we started with. Storm Records came in when Brilla was already finished. After they heard us at a concert, they became passionate about our project and wanted to invest as record publishers. Blaublau, on the other hand, is an artistic collective of close people with whom we shared concerts. Between us, there is creative support...like us, they carry on an aesthetic niche that we feel very much a part of.
