Quali sono state le principali fonti di ispirazione che ti hanno guidato nella creazione dell'album e in che modo queste influenze si sono riflesse nella tua musica?

L’ispirazione per quest’album è partita dall’esigenza di raccontare la malinconia, l’odio e l’amore per la realtà che ho vissuto fino ai 27 anni, attraverso un racconto musicale che descrivesse i luoghi, le sensazioni e le persone che hanno influenzato la mia quotidianità fino a quel momento. Questo racconto è iniziato nel 2020, dopo il mio trasferimento a Milano. Bari, e in particolare modo il quartiere di Carbonara, rappresentano la nascita, il fulcro e l’influenza maggiore della mia attitudine alla vita, contaminando anche quella musicale. Il trasferimento a Milano è in realtà una fuga da quel fulcro, dettata dal mio lavoro e dalla curiosità di vivere nuove esperienze. È una banalità, ma la distanza da quel fulcro mi ha portato a realizzare quanto forte fosse il legame. Il mix di tutte queste emozioni si è riflesso nei contrasti sonori della mia musica.

Quali sono gli elementi musicali che hai scelto di incorporare nel progetto per interpretare gli scenari mediterranei e come hai cercato di catturare la quotidianità visiva e sociale che hai vissuto per gran parte della tua vita?

Gli elementi musicali incorporati in “MEZZ’ALLER” derivano da tre percorsi differenti: quello della musica Classica/World, quello della musica Urban e quello della musica Jazz. Il processo di scrittura è stato molto spontaneo, di conseguenza solo al termine ho realizzato quanto tutti i percorsi fossero stati in grado di raccontare gli scenari mediterranei in totale naturalezza. Sicuramente gli aspetti legati alla musica World rappresentano la matrice ritmica, armonica e melodica. Paradossalmente, il racconto visivo della quotidianità è stato per me una riscoperta. Vivere lontano dalla mia terra mi ha portato a prestare molta attenzione e curiosità verso immagini quotidiane alle quali non avevo mai dato la giusta importanza, o che semplicemente non vivevo con la consapevolezza di oggi. Il racconto estetico dell’immaginario di Maladé è tutto concentrato su questo: tornare e osservare con consapevolezza e rispetto quei luoghi, conservandone il valore.

In che modo l'obiettivo di raccontare la quotidianità si riflette nelle tue scelte musicali e nel modo in cui hai composto le tracce dell'album?

La quotidianità raccontata nella mia musica è sempre stata caratterizzata dall’alternanza tra giornate infinite e giorni pigri completamente vuoti. Giornate interamente programmate alternate a giornate improvvisate o piene di piacevole caos. Un’altra costante quotidiana è stata il minimalismo, presente in quasi tutti gli aspetti della mia vita, dal cibo al modo di vestire. Inevitabilmente anche la composizione delle tracce dell’album è passata da queste caratteristiche. I temi musicali non hanno un vero sviluppo; sono loop infiniti, pieni di ossimori, contrasti e crescendo improvvisati nell’interazione con i musicisti presenti nel disco. Sono arrivato in studio con stralci di brani sui quali avevo solo tema, accordi e linee di basso. Quello che poi è stato registrato è frutto dell’improvvisazione e del sound design post. Anche il live sarà così. E’ una modalità spontanea che sto cercando di preservare.

Da dove nasce la collaborazione con Maladè per la realizzazione di questo disco e cosa vi ha colpito maggiormente del suo lavoro?

È già da un po’ di mesi che seguiamo da vicino il lavoro di Maladè e ciò che ci ha colpito sin dall’inizio è il forte carattere e l’identità che contraddistinguono il suo progetto: i temi affrontati dall’artista raccontano e interpretano il paesaggio e il contesto sociale tipici del versante adriatico, tra quotidianità e tradizione. Maladè riesce a rimanere così fedele a questa narrazione tanto da diventare il filo rosso che collega il tutto, dalla componente musicale all’immaginario che viene conseguentemente evocato.

Funclab Records è un’etichetta discografica indipendente che trova le sue radici nell’house e nell’hip hop, ma ambisce ad abbracciare sempre più generi. Da dove nasce la necessità di esplorare nuovi generi musicali e quali saranno i progetti futuri in cui vorreste spingervi ancora di più oltre i confini sonori già sperimentati?

Come appena detto, le nostre radici affondano nell’house e nell’hip-hop proprio perché, sin dalla fondazione di Funclab Records, i punti di riferimento che abbiamo avuto e che continuiamo ad avere sono label come Ninja Tune, Warp e Stones Throw. Inoltre, soprattutto negli ultimi anni, la volontà è stata quella di inglobare e conseguentemente avvicinare il nostro pubblico a più generi e influenze possibili per molteplici ragioni: innanzitutto rifiutare la ormai usuale classificazione in una scena/genere di riferimento; l’arte, e in particolar modo la musica, non può prendere una direzione univoca, ma assecondare la sua natura dinamica. In secondo luogo permettere e facilitare la contaminazione artistica tra i talent della label stessa. Crediamo fortemente che questo “esperimento” a cui abbiamo dato vita sarà ciò che tenteremo di portare avanti anche in futuro.

Quali ispirazioni grafiche e visive hanno contribuito a definire l'immagine ed il design dell'album "MEZZ’ALLER"?

Tutto è sintetizzabile in un’unica parola: dicotomie. Quest’album racconta la storia della nostra terra vista dagli occhi di Maladè. Una storia ricca di contraddizioni, tra divertimento e solitudine, eccentricità e malinconia. Una terra mistica dalla quale si è costretti a scappare per non smettere di amarla. Come questa storia anche la cover è ricca di simbolismo, ispirato al mondo religioso e alla cultura popolare.

What were the primary sources of inspiration that guided you in creating the album, and how were these influences reflected in your music?

The inspiration for this album started from the need to tell the melancholy, hatred, and love of the reality I lived until I was 27 years old through a musical narrative describing the places, feelings, and people that influenced my everyday life up to that point. This narrative began in 2020 after I moved to Milan. Bari, mainly the neighborhood of Carbonara, represents the birth, focus, and significant influence of my attitude to life, contaminating my musical perspective. The move to Milan is an escape from that fulcrum dictated by my work and curiosity to live new experiences. It is a platitude, but the distance from that fulcrum made me realize how strong the connection was. The mix of all these emotions was reflected in the sonic contrasts of my music.

What musical elements did you choose to incorporate in the project to interpret the Mediterranean settings, and how did you try to capture the visual and social everydayness that you have lived for most of your life?

The musical elements incorporated in "MEZZ'ALLER" come from three paths: Classical/World, Urban, and Jazz. The writing process was very spontaneous; consequently, only at the end did I realize how much all paths had been able to tell the Mediterranean sceneries naturally. The aspects related to World music represent the rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic matrix. Paradoxically, the visual narrative of everyday life was a rediscovery for me. Living far away from my homeland has led me to pay much attention and curiosity to simple images to which I had never given due importance or which I did not experience with the awareness of today. The aesthetic narrative of Maladé's imagery is about returning to and observing those places with attention and respect, preserving their value.

How is the goal of telling the everyday reflected in your musical choices, and how did you compose the album tracks?

The everydayness narrated in my music has always been characterized by alternating between endless days and empty, lazy days. Thoroughly planned days alternate with improvised days or days full of pleasant chaos. Another daily constant has been minimalism, present in almost every aspect of my life, from food to how I dress. Inevitably, the composition of the album's tracks also passed from these characteristics. The musical themes have no actual development; they are endless loops, full of oxymora, contrasts, and improvised crescendos in interacting with the musicians on the record. I came to the studio with excerpts of tracks on which I had only theme, chords, and bass lines. What was then recorded was the result of improvisation and post-sound design. The live performance will also be like that. It's a spontaneous mode that I'm trying to preserve.

Where did the collaboration with Maladè come from for making this record, and what impressed you most about his work?

We have been following Maladè's work closely for a few months now, and what struck us from the start is the strong character and identity that distinguish his project: the themes addressed by the artist tell and interpret the landscape and social context typical of the Adriatic side, between everyday life and tradition. Maladè remains so faithful to this narrative that he becomes the red thread that connects everything, from the musical component to the evoked imagery.

Funclab Records is an independent record label that finds its roots in house and hip-hop but aspires to embrace more and more genres. Where does the need to explore new genres of music come from, and what future projects would you like to push even further beyond the sonic boundaries you have already experimented with?

As just mentioned, our roots are in house and hip-hop precisely because, since the founding of Funclab Records, the reference points we have had and continue to have are labels like Ninja Tune, Warp, and Stones Throw. In addition, especially in recent years, the desire has been to encompass and consequently bring our audience closer to as many genres and influences as possible for multiple reasons: first, to reject the now usual classification into a reference scene/genre, art, and especially music, cannot take an unambiguous direction, but to go along with its dynamic nature. Second, to allow and facilitate artistic contamination among the label's talent. We strongly believe that this "experiment" to which we have given birth will be what we will attempt to continue in the future.

What graphic and visual inspirations helped define the image and design of the album "MEZZ'ALLER"?

Everything can be summarized in one word: dichotomies. This album tells the story of our land as seen through the eyes of Maladè. It is a story of contradictions between fun and loneliness, eccentricity and melancholy. A mystical land from which one is forced to escape in order not to stop loving it. Like this story, the cover is also rich in symbolism, inspired by the religious world and popular culture.
