Il VIVA! Festival è tornato. Dal 4 al 7 agosto 2022, tra masserie, trulli e antichi borghi medievali, si sono
esibiti artisti provenienti da tutto il mondo. La sesta edizione ha preso forma nella settecentesca e incantevole corte della Masseria Grofoleo, nel cuore della Valle d'Itria, in Puglia, a pochi passi da uno dei borghi più suggestivi d'Italia: Locorotondo.
Il tutto si è trasformato in un "unico e immenso palcoscenico naturale", in cui musica dal vivo e show esclusivi hanno dato vita ad un’esperienza imperdibile, a tratti surreale.
Sul palco del Viva! Festival si sono esibiti incredibili musicisti internazionali e nazionali, tra cui Moderat, Floating Points, Gilles Peterson, Kokoroko, Jon Hopkins, Nicola Conte e i Tiger & Woods, ai quali abbiamo posto un paio di domande per l'occasione.
Benvenuti su T-Mag. Quanto siete emozionati per la vostra ormai imminente esibizione al Viva! Festival? Cosa si prova nel poter tornare ad esprimersi liberamente davanti ad un pubblico del genere, dopo tempi tanto incerti?
È molto bello poter tornare a fare quello che per noi è ragione di vita. Quello che noi musicisti e performer abbiamo dovuto affrontare è stato oltre il devastante. Dover vedere rinnegata la possibilità di esercitare una grossa fetta della cosa che definisce la nostra esistenza è un'esperienza indescrivibilmente negativa, che ci ha lasciato una ferita aperta e che stiamo cercando di curare. Ed è grazie anche ad eventi così belli come il VIVA!, e alla cornice in cui si svolge, che sicuramente riusciremo a dimenticare quei lunghi mesi. Siamo molto felici.
Come si prepara un live/dj set per un evento artistico e culturale in cui non prevale un singolo filone musicale, ma una profonda e variegata rappresentazione della musica?
A dire il vero non c'è un metodo. Cerchiamo sempre di dire il nostro indipendentemente dal contesto, sia nel progetto Tiger & Woods che nei nostri progetti solitari.
Cosa vuol dire per voi poter condividere il palco - nella splendida e surreale Valle d'Itria - con artisti come Jon Hopkins, Moderat e The Cinematic Orchestra?
La Valle D'Itria è un zona bellissima e siamo molto contenti di ritrovarci in una cornice del genere insieme a tanti altri artisti. E siamo sicuri che il pubblico sarà eccezionale, la Puglia si sta ritagliando uno spazio sempre più di rilievo nel panorama nazionale ed è bello farne parte in questo momento di rinascita.
C'è qualche disco che portate sempre con voi, a cui non riuscireste mai a rinunciare? E per quanto riguarda gli strumenti, quali avete intenzione di portarvi dietro in questa prossima avventura sonora?
Ce ne sono diversi di dischi che non lasciano mai le nostre playlist, te ne possiamo indicare due dalle rotazioni più recenti: Mr Flagio "Take A Chance" e Chinaski "Energy 1". Mentre per quello che riguarda la strumentazione, al Viva! faremo un dj set pertanto non ci sarà strumentazione al seguito, ma come al solito ci divertiremo a trattare i Cdj come se fossero dei sequencers per ri-arrangiare al volo i brani che suoneremo.
Nei vostri dischi appaiono spesso riferimenti alla musica anni '80. Cosa rimane di quei tempi ancora attuale oggi? E quanto la musica contemporanea potrebbe ancora imparare dalle sonorità di una volta?
È evidente che nel suono del progetto Tiger & Woods ci sia un grosso richiamo a sonorità '80. Ma questo avviene soprattutto perché siamo malati di sintetizzatori analogici (e dei primi digitali)! Gli '80 rappresentavano la golden age per quel suono, e quella ricchezza di armoniche è quello che dovrebbe sempre essere presente nelle produzioni, nuove o vecchie che siano. In ogni caso non ci piace molto vedere la musica separata in epoche, il tempo è relativo e la qualità e il messaggio sono elementi universali.
Avete suonato in festival internazionali come Sónar e Primavera, pensate che l'Italia stia finalmente riuscendo a dare vita a realtà musicali degne di nota, nonostante una politica sempre più "distante"?
Sinceramente crediamo che l'Italia a suo modo abbia sempre avuto realtà musicali degne di nota, magari non in forme massive come in altre nazioni, ma abbiamo sempre avuto qualcosa da dire di rilevante. Certo gli spazi mancano, la politica non ha mai aiutato, ma tutto ciò stimola creatività e lo spirito d'avventura.
Come vi immaginate il futuro dei Tiger & Woods? C'è qualche sogno che vorreste a tutti i costi realizzare?
C'è solo un sogno che è nelle nostre teste: continuare ad essere in grado di poter esprimere la nostra musica e condividerla con un pubblico senza barriere e pregiudizi.

A natural stage among enchanted landscapes and medieval villages.
The Viva! Festival is back. From August 4 to 7, 2022, artists from all over the world performed among masserias, trulli, and ancient medieval villages. The sixth edition took shape in the eighteenth-century enchanting courtyard of the Masseria Grofoleo, in the heart of the Itria Valley, in Puglia, just a stone's throw from one of Italy's most picturesque villages: Locorotondo.
All it was transformed into a "unique and immense natural stage," where live music and exclusive shows created an unmissable, surreal experience.
On the stage of the Viva! Festival featured incredible international and domestic musicians, including Moderat, Floating Points, Gilles Peterson, Kokoroko, Jon Hopkins, Nicola Conte, and Tiger & Woods, whom we asked a couple of questions for the occasion.
Welcome to T-Mag. How excited are you about your new upcoming performance at the Viva Festival? How does it feel to freely express yourself again in front of such an audience after uncertain times?
It feels fantastic to return to what is a reason for us to live. What we musicians and performers have had to face has been beyond devastating. Having to see the possibility of practicing a big chunk of the thing that defines our existence denied is an indescribably negative experience that has left us with an open wound that we are trying to heal. And it is also thanks to events as beautiful as Viva! and the setting in which it takes place that we will surely be able to forget those long months. We are delighted.
How do you prepare a live/DJ set for an artistic and cultural event where no single musical strand prevails but a deep and varied representation of music?
There is no method. We always try to say our own regardless of the context, both in the Tiger & Woods project and in our solo projects.
What does it mean for you to be able to share the stage - in the beautiful and surreal Itria Valley - with artists like Jon Hopkins, Moderat, and The Cinematic Orchestra?
The Itria Valley is a beautiful area, and we are thrilled to find ourselves in such a set together with so many other artists. And we are sure that the audience will be exceptional, Puglia is carving out an increasingly prominent spot on the national scene, and it is great to be part of this moment of rebirth.
Is there any record you always carry with you that you could never give up? And as for instruments, which ones do you plan to take with you on this next sonic adventure?
Several records never leave our playlists; we can point you to two from the most recent rotations: Mr. Flagio "Take A Chance" and Chinaski "Energy 1." While as far as instrumentation is concerned, at Viva! we will be doing a DJ set, so there will be no instrumentation in tow, but as usual, we will have fun treating the CDJs as if they were sequencers to re-arrange on the fly the tracks we will play.
References to 80s music often appear in your records. What remains from those times that are still relevant today? And how much could contemporary music still learn from the sounds of yesteryear?
It is evident that in the sound of the Tiger & Woods project, there is an extensive reference to 80s sounds. But this is mainly because we are sick of analog synthesizers (and early digital ones)! The '80s were the golden age for that sound, and that richness of harmonics is what should always be present in productions, new or old. We don't like to see music separated into eras; time is relative, and quality and message are universal elements.
You have played in international festivals such as Sónar and Primavera, do you think Italy is finally succeeding in giving birth to noteworthy musical realities, despite increasingly "distant" politics?
We sincerely believe that Italy, in its way, has always had noteworthy musical realities, maybe not in massive form as in other nations. Still, we have always had something relevant to say. Of course, spaces are lacking, and politics has never helped, but all this stimulates creativity and the spirit of adventure.
How do you envision the future of Tiger & Woods? Is there any dream you would like to achieve at all costs?
There is only one dream that is in our heads, to continue to be able to express our music and share it with an audience without barriers and prejudice.
