Grand River ha presentato al Rewire Festival 2023 All Above live, il tour del suo ultimo album. Lo show è accompagnato dal light design di Marco Ciceri e da Andert Tysma al pianoforte acustico. La performance ha unito suono, luce, fumo e lavoro visivo in un'esperienza dinamica e multisensoriale che coinvolgesse il pubblico su più livelli.

Ciao Aimee, raccontaci qualcosa di più su "All Above", su come tu sia riuscita a creare i paesaggi sonori che emergono durante l’ascolto e come essi contribuiscano a diffondere il messaggio dell’intero album. Nel mio terzo album, "All Above", pubblicato su Editions Mego nel febbraio 2023, ho approfondito le forze che ci guidano, tentano e ci influenzano. Nasce da un'esplorazione personale avvenuta nel corso degli anni, dietro cui mi sono sforzata di trovare un significato. L'album è stato scritto negli ultimi due anni con meticolosa attenzione ai dettagli, e la strumentazione è molto diversificata, incorporo una vasta gamma di strumenti come voci, archi, organi, chitarre e sintetizzatori, tutti ancorati attorno al tema centrale del pianoforte.

La dedica dell'album a Peter Rehberg, scomparso improvvisamente nel 2021, aggiunge un altro strato di risonanza emotiva ai temi dell'album. L’introduzione di queste pause nella struttura potrebbero essere interpretate come una metafora di quelle ‘soste’ emotive che viviamo quando perdiamo qualcuno che amiamo. Puoi dirci di più sulla struttura di "All Above" e come queste ‘crepe’ contribuiscono a rappresentare i temi dell'album?

La presenza di interruzioni e altre forme di processi dinamici può servire come promemoria della storia e della durata di un record. Tali elementi possono raccontare una storia sulla creazione e il suo viaggio nel tempo. Inoltre, possono rappresentare la fragilità e l'impermanenza della vita, il passare del tempo, e anche le lotte e la resilienza dello spirito umano, che sono temi che ho esplorato profondamente. Queste interruzioni e processi dinamici possono offrire una nuova prospettiva e una nuova dimensione ai pezzi, aumentandoli e aggiungendo strati di significato per l'ascoltatore da interpretare e apprezzare.

Da dove sei partita per adattare questo approccio e questa tensione emotiva alla performance live?

Tradurre un album in una performance dal vivo può essere un compito difficile, in quanto comporta catturare l'essenza della musica in un ambiente diverso. Il live show di All Above offre un'esperienza d'ascolto migliorata rispetto al solo album, in quanto presenta riprese che sono state composte appositamente per l'esecuzione dal vivo.

“All Above" richiede impegno da parte dell'ascoltatore, che deve fare uno sforzo a non perdersi in quello che è l’ambiente circostante. Come riesci a creare una forte connessione con il pubblico, avvicinandolo ai temi che vuoi raccontare?

Spesso inizio con le mie esperienze personali e poi mi espando su questi temi in un modo in cui gli altri possono relazionarsi. Come artista, ho scoperto che comunicare le mie esperienze e prospettive personali in modo onesto, vulnerabile e autentico è un potente mezzo per connettersi con le persone. Quando condivido la mia verità, crea un senso di intimità e fiducia con i miei ascoltatori, consentendo una connessione più profonda.

La tua performance live a Rewire Festival 2023 ha visto la collaborazione del light designer Marco Ciceri. Quali difficoltà possono sorgere quando si coordina il lighting design con una performance musicale dal vivo?

Lavoro con Marco Ciceri dal 2014. Nel corso degli anni, la nostra collaborazione creativa si è rafforzata e abbiamo sviluppato una profonda comprensione dei punti di forza e delle visioni artistiche l’uno dell’altro. Mentre lavoriamo a stretto contatto, siamo sempre impegnati a trovare il modo migliore per intrecciare sia la musica che gli aspetti visivi delle nostre produzioni. Condividiamo la passione di esplorare nuovi modi e miriamo a unire questi due campi creativi in un modo che migliora l'esperienza della performance.

Abbiamo creato diverse produzioni audiovisive insieme e questa volta, Marco ha creato l’intera scenografia del palcoscenico che eseguiva proprio dal vivo. Questo spettacolo ha richiesto molta organizzazione, test e attenzione ai dettagli tecnici. La creazione di ogni spettacolo richiede anche una notevole quantità di tempo per garantire che tutto sia a posto e funzioni correttamente.

Il vostro nuovo live show coinvolge anche Andert Tysma al pianoforte. In che modo elementi elettronici e acustici riescono a completarsi a vicenda invece di scontrarsi durante una performance dal vivo?

In “All Above”, ho deliberatamente offuscato i confini tra musica elettronica e acustica ancora più che nei lavori precedenti. Di conseguenza, avere Andert Tysma sul palco mi è sembrata una scelta naturale. Ogni elemento musicale nelle mie composizioni incarna un'emozione o un umore unico: la chitarra elettrica, ad esempio, può rappresentare forza o violenza, i sintetizzatori possono trasportarci nel mondo dei sogni e gli strumenti acustici possono evidenziare intimità e calore.

Il tema dell’ambiente è centrale nella performance. Come pensi che la musica possa sensibilizzare rispetto alle questioni ambientali?

Le scelte di una persona per una vita sostenibile sono legate alle sue scelte artistiche. Le mie scelte per una vita sostenibile riflettono i miei valori e convinzioni. Spero di ispirare gli altri a fare lo stesso attraverso l'esempio e la promozione del cambiamento positivo.

Come pensi che l'ambiente circostante influenzi l'esperienza d'ascolto del tuo album? Inoltre, che tipo di impostazione si prevede che viene giocato per creare la migliore esperienza possibile?

L'esperienza di ascolto perfetta è una questione soggettiva e può differire significativamente da persona a persona. Ciò che un individuo considera ideale potrebbe non essere lo stesso per un'altra persona. Questo perché la musica, come molte altre forme d'arte, è un'esperienza profondamente personale, e tutti abbiamo preferenze e percezioni uniche che plasmano il modo in cui la godiamo e la interpretiamo.

For the creative process behind the release, Grand River asks what guiding forces are be driving, enticing, and affecting us. The album “All Above” has aimed to create a sonic landscape that would immerse the listener in a dreamlike state, with layers of sound that would reveal themselves over repeated listens.

Grand River presented “All Above” live at Rewire Festival 2023, the album tour of her latest release, accompanied with light design by Marco Ciceri and Andert Tysma on the acoustic piano. The performance brought sound, light, smoke and visual work together in a cohesive, elevated and immersive experience.

Hello Aimee, Can you share more about the inspiration behind “All Above” and how you approached creating the unique soundscapes we hear throughout the record? how do they contribute to the album's overall message?

In my third album, "All Above,” released on Editions Mego in February 2023, I delved into the forces that guide, tempt, and influence us. This concept has been a personal exploration over the years, and I strived to find meaning behind it. The album has been written with meticulous attention to detail over the past two years, and the instrumentation is diverse, incorporating a wide range of instruments such as voices, strings, organs, guitars, and synthesizers, all anchored around the central theme of the piano.

The dedication of the album to Peter Rehberg, who passed away suddenly in 2021, adds another layer of emotional resonance to the album's themes. The inclusion of these cracks in the structure could be interpreted as a metaphor for the disruptions in life that occur when we lose someone we love. Can you tell us more about the structure of "All Above" and how these cracks contribute to the album's themes?

The presence of disruptions and other forms of dynamic processes can serve as a reminder of the history and lifespan of a record. Such elements can tell a story about the creation and its journey over time. Additionally, they can represent the fragility and impermanence of life, the passage of time, and even the struggles and resilience of the human spirit, which are themes I regularly explore. These disruptions and dynamic processes can offer a fresh perspective and new dimension to the pieces, augmenting them and adding layers of meaning for the listener to interpret and appreciate.

Where did you start to adapt this approach and this emotional tension to suit a live audience?

Translating an album into a live performance can be a difficult task, as it involves capturing the essence of the music in a different environment. The All Above live show offers an enhanced listening experience compared to the album alone, as it features reprises that are specifically composed for the live performance.

“All Above" demands engagement from the listener, refusing to evaporate into the background. How do you balance personal themes with creating a connection with your audience?

I often start with my own personal experiences and then expand on those themes in a way that others can relate to. As an artist, I have found that communicating my personal experiences and perspectives in an honest, vulnerable, and authentic way is a powerful means of connecting with people. When I share my own truth, it creates a sense of intimacy and trust with my listeners, allowing for a deeper connection to be formed.

Your live performance at Rewire Festival 2023 featured a collaboration with light designer Marco Ciceri. What difficulties can arise when coordinating the lighting design with a live music performance?

Marco Ciceri and I have been collaborating since 2014. Over the years, our creative partnership has grown stronger and we have developed a deep understanding of each other's strengths and artistic visions. As we work closely together, we are always striving to find the best way to intertwine both the music and visual aspects of our productions. We share a passion for exploring new ways to merge these two creative fields in a way that enhances the experience of the performance. We have created several audio-visual productions together and this time for the All Above live show Marco created the light and visual stage design which he performs live during each performance. This show required a lot of organization, testing, and attention to technical details. Setting up each show also takes a significant amount of time to ensure everything is in place and functioning properly.

Your brand new live show also involves Andert Tysma on the acoustic piano. How can performers ensure that the electronic and acoustic elements complement each other instead of clashing during a live performance?

In “All Above”, I have deliberately blurred the lines between electronic and acoustic music even more than in previous works. As a result, having Andert Tysma join me on stage felt like a natural choice. Each musical element in my compositions embodies a unique emotion or mood: the electric guitar, for instance, can represent strength or violence, the synthesizers can transport us into the world of dreams, and the acoustic instruments can highlight intimacy and warmth.

The album places a great deal of importance on the topic of the environment. What do you think is the role of music in raising awareness about environmental issues?

As a person, choices about how to live a sustainable life are closely intertwined with their choices as an artist. The choices I make about how to live a sustainable life are a reflection of my values and beliefs. By leading by example and promoting positive change, I hope to inspire others to do the same.

How do you think the environment affects the listening experience of your album? Quale credi che possa essere il contesto migliore per godersi la tua performance?

The perfect listening experience is a subjective matter and can differ significantly from person to person. What one individual considers to be ideal may not be the same for another person. This is because music, like many other art forms, is a profoundly personal experience, and we all have unique preferences and perceptions that shape how we enjoy and interpret it. The force and potential of sound lies in its ability to connect with us on a personal level and evoke emotions and memories that are meaningful to us.
