GINEVRA NERVI | Un viaggio onirico tra l'accessibile e l'avanguardia
Ginevra Nervi, tra i nomi più noti nell’ambito della composizione di colonne sonore originali in Italia, ha pubblicato il suo primo album “The Disorder of Appearances”.
T-mag aveva già incontrato Ginevra Nervi, prima ancora della pubblicazione dell’EP Klastòs, per approfondire il suo percorso da compositrice nel cinema e raccontare insieme a lei invece il progetto artistico personale visto che in quel momento presentava il singolo P!2. (Leggi l'intervista qui)
L’album, pubblicato il 10 giugno per La Tempesta International, è stato scritto tra ottobre 2020 e dicembre 2021. The Disorder of Appearances presenta due nuclei compositivi: il cuore dell’album, composto dai brani Twelve, Seven, Nine, Eleven, Twenty, Zero, Zero-two-one, trova origine in un’improvvisazione pensata per un live show su Mutant Radio (Tbilisi).
In questo primo nucleo, i due attori principali sono la voce, intesa come suono primordiale per eccellenza, linfa vitale dell’umano, ed il rumore, inteso come ciò che solitamente decodifichiamo come elemento disturbante in un contesto musicale tradizionale. In questa unione, La voce vuole restare priva di codificazione attraverso lettere e parole: le tracce che costituiscono questo primo nucleo sono infatti prive di testo, lasciando che il suono ricopra un ruolo centrale; non è chiesto all’ascoltatore di attribuire un significato a ciò che ascolta, ma viene lasciato libero di immergersi nel paesaggio sonoro che gli si presenta per scoprirne tutte le sue sfumature.
“Eleven” rappresenta il paradigma musicale di questo primo nucleo dell’album.
La traccia si compone di linguaggi musicali differenti. Nella parte iniziale primeggiano la voce e gli archi pizzicati, prima che subentri la sintesi granulare a sostegno di una componente ritmica. Come sempre nel processo creativo di Ginevra Nervi una componente etera si incontra e scontra con quella pulsante. Un dualismo; dialogo tra dimensione eterea e terrena.
“Zero” invece, co-scritto con Iosonouncane, è un omaggio alla musica concreta francese rivisitata in chiave attuale. Ginevra Nervi ne ha costruito la struttura attingendo da un'ampia libreria di campioni sonori (dal traffico della città ai suoni della metropolitana, passando per il vociare della gente al mercato) aggiungendo una sola pulsazione su questi, prima che Iosonouncane intervenisse con diversi strati di percussioni che amplificano il ritmo del brano ed uno strato di textures elettroniche che ne diventano la melodia.
Il secondo nucleo dell’album rappresenta invece l’evoluzione alla parola. Qui compare un testo intellegibile, eseguito da una voce solista, in cui ogni brano è volontariamente ispirato dalle scoperte della meccanica quantistica, della fisica delle alte energie e dalla nascita della fisica contemporanea. La fascinazione per questa materia nasce dalla lettura di alcuni saggi di fisici del passato quali Heisenberg, Schrödinger, Planck, Dirac e contemporanei quali Rovelli e Rudolph. Da qui il titolo dell’album, un condensato sonoro il cui input creativo, sua forza motrice, arriva da riflessioni sulle apparenze e sulle “illusioni” del mondo circostante. Questa seconda metà vuole essere un inno allo spingersi oltre alle apparenze, andare in profondità, rompere il loop in cui l’uomo contemporaneo vive, rieducando a guardare con occhi differenti quello che il mondo attuale ci propone, risvegliandosi dal sonno mediatico in cui siamo immersi e tornando ad ascoltare il cosmo.
Ecco che “An interior of strange beauty” diventa una preghiera in tempi bui, ciò che spinge l’essere umano a voler oltrepassare i limiti della conoscenza.
La traccia si sviluppa intorno a due sezioni: un’introduzione, in cui spicca la voce principale che si appoggia a textures elettroniche di sfondo, seguita da una risoluzione dove trovano spazio ritmiche frammentate e discontinue a sostegno di sezioni di archi, fiati e melodie eseguite da sintetizzatori.
La traccia di chiusura del disco, “Incoming Call”, rappresenta il ritorno a casa dopo un lungo viaggio tra ricordi sonori e parole misteriose che si allontanano sempre di più, riportandoci finalmente ad ascoltare con purezza il mondo che ci circonda.

GINEVRA NERVI | A dreamlike journey between the accessible and the avant-garde
Ginevra Nervi, one of the best-known names in the composition of original soundtracks in Italy, has released his first album, "The Disorder of Appearances."
T-mag had already met Ginevra Nervi, even before the release of the EP Klastòs, to deepen her path as a composer in cinema and tell with her instead the personal artistic project since at that time she presented the single P!2. (Read the interview here)
The album, released on June 10 for La Tempesta International, was written between October 2020 and December 2021. The Disorder of Appearances presents two compositional nuclei: the heart of the album, composed of the tracks Twelve, Seven, Nine, Eleven, Twenty, Zero, Zero-two-one, originates in an improvisation designed for a live show on Mutant Radio (Tbilisi).
In this first nucleus, the two main actors are the voice, understood as primordial sound par excellence, the lifeblood of the human, and noise understood as what we usually decode as a disturbing element in a traditional musical context. In this union, The voice wants to remain without codification through letters and words. The traces that make up this first nucleus are, in fact, without text, leaving the sound to play a central role. The listener is not asked to attribute a meaning to what he hears, but he is left free to immerse himself in the soundscape presented to him to discover all its nuances.
"Eleven" represents the musical paradigm of this first nucleus of the album.
The track consists of different musical languages. In the initial part, the voice and plucked strings predominate before the granular synthesis takes over to support a rhythmic component. As always, in the creative process of Ginevra Nervi an ether component meets and collides with that button. A dualism; a dialogue between the ethereal and earthly dimensions.
"Zero" instead, co-written with Iosonouncane, is a tribute to French concrete music revisited in a current key. Ginevra Nervi has built the structure drawing from an extensive library of sound samples - from the city's traffic to the sounds of the subway, passing through the chatter of people at the market). Then she added a single pulse on these before Iosonouncane intervened with several layers of percussion that amplify the song's rhythm and a layer of electronic textures that become the melody.
The second core of the album represents the evolution of the word. Here appears an intelligible text, performed by a solo voice, in which each piece is voluntarily inspired by the discoveries of quantum mechanics, the physics of high energies, and the birth of contemporary physics. The fascination for this matter arises from reading some essays by physicists of the past such as Heisenberg, Schrödinger, Planck, Dirac and contemporaries such as Rovelli and Rudolph. Hence, the album's title is a condensed sound whose creative input, its driving force, comes from reflections on appearances and the "illusions" of the surrounding world. This second half wants to be a hymn to go beyond appearances. To go deep, break the loop in which contemporary man lives, re-educating to look with different eyes at what the current world offers us, awakening from the media sleep in which we are immersed, and returning to listen to the cosmos.
Here "An interior of strange beauty" becomes a prayer in dark times, which pushes the human being to want to go beyond the limits of knowledge.
The track develops around two sections: an introduction, which stands out the leading voice that rests on electronic textures background, followed by a resolution where they find fragmented and discontinuous rhythmic space in support of sections of bows, winds, and melodies performed by synthesizers.
The album's closing track, "Incoming Call" represents the return home after a long journey between good memories and mysterious words that move further and further, finally bringing us to listen with purity to the world around us.
